Long ago, a war happened in the desert.

A large war took place in the deserts of Egypt and Libya.

Italy asked Germany for help. A German leader named Erwin Rommel arrived. He led a group called Operation Sonnenblume. This group pushed the Allies back toward Egypt.

Supplies were very hard to move. Soldiers needed much food and water.

The Western Desert campaign was a major part of the Second World War. It took place in the vast deserts of Egypt and Libya.

Military operations moved back and forth across the sand. In December 1940, the British launched a raid called Operation Compass.

Moving supplies was a huge and difficult job for everyone. The Axis forces had to haul goods over very long distances.

Fighting continued through 1942 with many important battles. Axis forces captured Tobruk after the Battle of Gazala. This caused the Allies to retreat to El Alamein.

The war in North Africa finally came to an end in 1943. The remaining Axis forces surrendered in May 1943.

The Western Desert campaign, often called the Desert War, was a major theater of the Second World War.
The geography of the Western Desert presented constant challenges to military operations.
Logistics, or the management of supplies, determined much of the campaign's progress.
The British faced their own logistical hurdles, especially regarding water. They had to build pipelines and dig wells, but many wells only provided salt water. To manage resources, they created the Middle East Supply Centre (MESC). This organization helped coordinate imports and encouraged local production. By March 1943, the MESC had helped replace the equivalent of 100 Liberty ship deliveries through local crops. They increased the production of potatoes, dairy, fish, and cooking oil. They even used cattle drives from Sudan to reduce the need for refrigerated shipping.
The war began in June 1940 when Italy declared war.

Fighting continued through several intense stages of movement and counter-attacks.

The campaign reached its conclusion through combined Allied efforts. While the Eighth Army pushed from the east, the Allied First Army invaded Tunisia from the west during Operation Torch.
