The Armenian army, led by Vardan Mamikonian, fought the Sasanian army. Although the Persians won the battle, it was a strategic victory for the Armenians. It led to the Nvarsak Treaty in 484 AD. This treaty allowed Armenians to practice Christianity freely. Later, the area saw many changes under different rulers. It was under Islamic rule in the 7th century. The Seljuk Turkic tribes conquered the region in the 11th and 12th centuries.
The province has also seen many periods of foreign occupation. During the 18th century, the Ottomans captured the northwest during an Afghan invasion. However, Nader Shah later expelled them to restore Iranian control. In the early 20th century, the Russian Tsarist army occupied the area multiple times. The Ottomans also occupied the province between 1914 and 1919. In 1941, Soviet forces occupied the region. This led to the short-lived Republic of Mahabad from 1945 to 1946. These shifts show how the province has been a central point in many conflicts.
Today, West Azerbaijan is home to a diverse group of people. There are no official statistics on the exact ethnic makeup. However, the population mostly consists of Azerbaijanis and Kurds. Smaller groups of Armenians, Assyrians, and Jews also live there. The distribution of these groups varies by county. For example, the counties of Bukan, Mahabad, and Sardasht are populated by Kurds. Other areas like Chaldoran and Salmas have mixed populations of both Azerbaijanis and Kurds. Salmas is also known for having a Christian minority.
The population of the province has grown steadily in recent years. In 2006, the census counted 2,831,779 people. By 2011, the population rose to 3,080,576. The 2016 census measured the population at 3,265,219 people. Most of these people, over 65 percent, live in urban areas. Urmia is the most significant urban center with 736,224 residents in 2016. Other major cities include Khoy, with 198,845 people, and Bukan, with 193,501. These growing cities make the province a busy and important part of Iran.
