The stories in wayang are very old and famous.
Wayang has a very long history in Indonesia.
Wayang is a traditional form of Indonesian puppet theatre that carries deep cultural meaning. The term refers to both the individual puppets and the entire theatrical performance. In the Javanese language, the word means "shadow" or "imagination."

The most famous type is wayang kulit, which translates to "skin" wayang. This refers to the leather construction of the puppets.

A single master artist, known as a dalang, directs the entire production. The dalang acts as both a storyteller and a spiritual leader. They manipulate the puppets and provide various character voices.

The stories told during wayang are often epic and complex. Many plays are based on the Hindu epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. Other performances use local cultural legends, such as the Panji tales.
Scholars have long debated the exact origins of wayang. Some suggest shadow play originated in Central Asia, China, or India. For example, Indian tholu bommalata uses colored leather puppets behind a screen. However, many theater scholars argue that wayang is an indigenous Javanese creation. They point out that the technical terms used in wayang are Javanese, not Sanskrit. Furthermore, the puppets and storytelling styles are uniquely sophisticated.
Historical records prove that wayang has been a staple of Indonesian life for centuries. The oldest known record dates to 903 CE in the Dalinan charter. This document mentions a performer named Galigi who held a puppet show for the gods. He told the story of the hero Bima Kumara from the Mahabharata. Another record from the mid-10th century, the Kuţi inscription, mentions three types of performers. By 1035 CE, the poet Mpu Kanwa wrote about the shadow screen in his poem, Arjunawiwaha. This poem compared life to a performance where a higher power is just a screen away. These ancient texts show that the complex traditions of wayang were already well-established.
Wayang exists in several different styles and forms across the islands. In Central Java, the cities of Surakarta and Yogyakarta host the most famous traditions. These styles are often imitated by other regions. Other regional styles can be found in West Java, East Java, and Cirebon. In Bali, the wayang kulit figures are more compact and naturalistic. In Lombok, some puppets represent real people.
