The ecology of the mountains is diverse and specialized. The range is part of a temperate coniferous forest ecoregion. You can find trees like Douglas fir, subalpine fir, and Engelmann spruce. In the drier foothills, Gambel oak is common. Various types of big sagebrush dominate the drier landscapes. These plants provide critical habitat for the greater sage grouse. The range is also home to several endemic plants. These are species that grow nowhere else on Earth. Examples include the five-petal cliffbush and Utah angelica.
