Warren Hastings was a central figure in the expansion of British power in India.
His early life in England shaped his disciplined approach to work. Born in 1732 in Oxfordshire, he was raised by his grandfather after his father moved to Barbados. He attended Westminster School in London, where he was a top scholar. In 1750, he joined the East India Company as a writer, which is a type of clerk. He arrived in Calcutta in August 1750. To better understand his new environment, he mastered Urdu and Persian. This linguistic skill allowed him to engage more deeply with local politics.
Political instability in Bengal created significant dangers for British interests. In 1756, the Nawab Siraj ud-Daulah took power and held anti-European views. This led to the capture of Calcutta and the imprisonment of British civilians.
As a resident, Hastings acted as an ambassador but often issued orders to the Nawab. He developed a philosophy of mediation to improve relations with Indian rulers.
Conflict escalated when Mir Qasim attempted to assert his independence. He rebuilt his army using European instructors and mercenaries. This led to the Battle of Buxar in October 1764, which the British won. As a result, the Treaty of Allahabad in 1765 granted the Company the right to collect taxes in Bengal. This transformed the Company from a mere trading entity into a powerful tax collector. Hastings resigned in late 1764 and returned to Britain. He struggled with large debts and eventually returned to India in 1769 to restore his finances.
In 1772, Hastings was appointed governor of Calcutta, the most important presidency. The Regulating Act of 1773 reorganized the government, making him the first governor-general.
His administration was not without intense controversy and legal challenges.
