The province sits near the Vistula Lagoon to the northwest. To the north, it borders the Kaliningrad Oblast, which is an exclave of Russia. It also shares borders with Podlaskie, Masovian, Kuyavian-Pomeranian, and Pomeranian provinces. This region is a vital part of Poland's geography and history.

The name of the province comes from two historic regions: Warmia and Masuria. However, the province also includes parts of other regions. These include Chełmno Land, Powiśle, Mazovia, Bartia, and Natangia. Originally, the land was inhabited by pagan Old Prussian clans. These clans included the Bartians, Pogesanians, and Warmians. The name Warmia comes directly from these people. Over time, these groups were assimilated into newer populations. This changed the ethnic and cultural makeup of the entire area.

History in this region changed through many conflicts and political shifts. During the Northern Crusade, the Catholic Teutonic Order conquered the Old Prussians. The land became part of the theocratic State of the Teutonic Order. The Order encouraged colonization by German settlers in Warmia, a process called Ostsiedlung. They also brought Polish colonists from Masovia, known as Masurians. This is how the name Masuria was formed. Later, the Order fought with Poland and Lithuania. At the Battle of Grunwald, the Polish and Lithuanian forces defeated the Order.

Following the Thirteen Years' War, the region was divided under Polish suzerainty. Elbląg and Warmia were incorporated directly into the Kingdom of Poland. Masuria became a Polish fief under the Teutonic Order. In 1525, the state of the Teutonic Order ended through secularisation. Grandmaster Albert Hohenzollern proclaimed the Duchy of Prussia. This duchy eventually became part of the Brandenburg-Prussia union. Later, Frederick I wanted to unite the Duchy with Brandenburg. He participated in the Partitions of Poland. This led to Warmia being annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia. The region then became part of East Prussia.

The 20th century brought significant hardship and war to the province. In 1914, the area became a battlefield during World War I. The Battle of Tannenberg occurred on the Eastern Front here. During World War II, the German invasion of Poland began in 1939. The German authorities carried out mass arrests of local Poles. They also established the Soldau concentration camp in Działdowo.

Other sites included subcamps of the Stutthof concentration camp. The region also held the Wolf's Lair, which was Adolf Hitler's military headquarters. After World War II, the German population was expelled following the Potsdam Agreement. Many Masurians also emigrated in the following years.

Today, the province is famous for its diverse geography and tourism. The Masurian Lake District is a major highlight. It contains more than 2,000 lakes. This includes Śniardwy and Mamry, the largest lakes in Poland. Towns like Mikołajki are popular summer destinations.
