The Wagner Group is a private military company. This is a group of soldiers paid by a company rather than a country.
The group first appeared in 2014. They worked in places like Ukraine and Syria. They also went to many countries in Africa. In Africa, they helped leaders in exchange for gold and diamond mines.
Some of the group's actions were very wrong. They were accused of hurting and robbing civilians. In 2023, Prigozhin had a fight with the Russian government. He led an armed rebellion against the state. The fight ended quickly when an agreement was made. Later that year, Prigozhin died in a plane crash. Now, his son Pavel Prigozhin is said to lead the group.
The Wagner Group is a private military company from Russia. A private military company is a group of soldiers paid by a business instead of a government. This group is often used by the Russian government to carry out tasks in other countries. Using a private group allows the government to hide its true involvement in wars. It also helps hide the number of Russian soldiers who are hurt or killed. This makes it harder for people to know what is really happening during conflicts.
To prepare for work, the group uses special training camps. One such site is near a small village called Molkino.

The group first appeared in 2014 during the annexation of Crimea.
Two men were the main leaders of the group for a long time. Yevgeny Prigozhin was a businessman who funded the group. Some people called him "Putin's chef" because of his catering business.
In June 2023, the group's history changed during an armed rebellion.
The Wagner Group, officially known as PMC Wagner, is a Russian state-funded private military company. A private military company, or PMC, is a group of armed personnel employed by a business rather than a national government. This organization has functioned as a proxy for the Russian government. A proxy is a person or group that acts on behalf of another. By using Wagner, the Russian state can maintain plausible deniability during foreign military operations. This means the government can claim it is not directly involved in a conflict. This structure also helps hide the actual number of Russian casualties during foreign interventions.
The group's history began during the 2014 annexation of Crimea. It first appeared during the war in Donbas to support Russian separatist forces in Ukraine.
For much of its existence, the group's leadership was not clearly defined. Two men were central to its operation: Yevgeny Prigozhin and Dmitry Utkin.
The group operates through a complex network of companies rather than a single corporation. This includes entities like Concord Management and Consulting. This sprawling structure makes it difficult for Western governments to restrict Wagner's activities. The group has also used shell companies to trade in natural resources. A shell company is a business that exists mainly on paper to hide ownership or money trails. For example, a company called Meroe Gold acted as a shell for Wagner in Sudan. This allowed the group to use Western banking systems, such as JP Morgan Chase, to process payments. This financial access helped the group establish a foothold in Africa.
Wagner has been active in many different regions, including Syria, Libya, and Mali.
Recruitment and training involve very strict protocols. New recruits often train at a facility near the village of Molkino.
In June 2023, the group's relationship with the Russian state collapsed. Yevgeny Prigozhin began publicly criticizing the Russian Defense Ministry. He eventually accused the government of lying about the reasons for the invasion of Ukraine. On June 23, 2023, Prigozhin led an armed rebellion.
