The Wadden Sea is a special place where land and sea meet. 

Many animals live in these waters. Hundreds of thousands of birds use the sea to rest. They include ducks, geese, and waders. Seals also live here. You might see harbor seals or grey seals. 
This place has a long history. Large floods once caused many deaths. People built dikes to stay safe. Now, the area is very different because of humans. It is one of the most changed habitats on Earth. Because it is so special, UNESCO put it on the World Heritage List. This means it is a site of great value to the world.

This landscape changes constantly because of the tides. When the tide is high, the water covers the area. When the tide is low, the mudflats appear.
History shows that this area has been a hard place for people to live. In the past, huge floods caused many deaths. There were the Saint Marcellus' floods in 1219 and 1362. Other big floods happened in 1634 and 1717. These floods were so strong they changed the shape of the coastline. To stay safe, people built many dikes and causeways. 
Many animals rely on these waters to survive. Hundreds of thousands of birds like ducks and geese stop here to rest or stay for the winter. You can also find seals, such as harbor and grey seals, living in the area. 
Today, many people visit the Wadden Sea for fun. Some go to the islands which have been popular seaside resorts since the 1800s. 

The Wadden Sea is a vast intertidal zone located in the southeastern North Sea. 

The landscape is a dynamic zone constantly contested by land and sea. Much of the current geography was shaped by storm tides between the 10th and 14th centuries. These storms overflowed coastal dunes and carried away former peat lands. The present-day islands are actually remnants of those former coastal dunes. 
Human history in this region is marked by struggle against the water. Historically, the coastal regions suffered from massive floods that caused thousands of deaths. Notable disasters include the Saint Marcellus' floods of 1219 and 1362. Other major events were the Burchardi flood of 1634 and the Christmas Flood of 1717. These floods were powerful enough to significantly change the shape of the coastline. To protect themselves, humans built numerous dikes and several causeways. These structures have changed the environment so much that it is one of the most human-altered habitats on the planet. While dikes have occasionally been overrun locally, recent floods have resulted in few or no fatalities.
The Wadden Sea supports an incredibly rich variety of flora and fauna. It is famous for its massive bird populations. Hundreds of thousands of waders, ducks, and geese use the area as a wintering site or a stopover during migration. The region also provides habitats for gulls, terns, herons, and Eurasian spoonbills. Some birds of prey, like the white-tailed eagle, are also seen there. However, the total biodiversity is smaller now than it was in the past. During the warmer Holocene climatic optimum, species like greater flamingos and Dalmatian pelicans were common. Today, human activity and environmental changes cause some species to go extinct while others migrate in.
Marine life in the Wadden Sea is equally complex and varied. Larger fish such as Atlantic salmon, brown trout, and rays inhabit several sections. Some species, like the European sea sturgeon, only exist there now because of reintroduction projects. The Danish part of the sea holds the world's only remaining natural population of houting. The area is also a vital habitat for grey and harbor seals. 
Environmental changes pose significant challenges to this delicate system. Sea level rise is a major threat to low-lying areas with small gradients, such as these tidal flats. Current sea level rise is measured at approximately 3.7 mm per year. Interestingly, recent studies show that sediment accretion—the buildup of sediment—is exceeding this rise in most areas. This is especially true along the German coastline. The tidal flats in the Dutch Wadden Sea are also accreting, but they do so at a slower pace. Invasive species like certain algae, plants, and organisms also cause negative effects on native species. Furthermore, the reduction of the Rhine river due to dams has put 90% of the species historically found in that section at risk.
Despite these challenges, the Wadden Sea remains a major center for recreation and cooperation. Since the 19th century, many islands have served as popular seaside resorts.
