It makes the whole world feel a little bit closer together.
Vodafone Group Public Limited Company is a British multinational telecommunications company.
The origins of Vodafone trace back to military radio technology. In 1980, Ernest Harrison, the chairman of Racal Electronics Plc, made a deal with Lord Weinstock of the UK General Electric Company. This deal gave Racal access to battlefield radio technology. Harrison instructed Gerry Whent to explore how this technology could be used for civilian purposes. In 1982, a partnership called Racal-Millicom was formed to bid for the UK's second cellular radio licence. This partnership consisted of Racal holding 80%, Millicom holding 15% plus royalties, and the Hambros Technology Trust holding 5%. The bid was successful because it offered the best prospect for early national coverage.
Vodafone officially launched on January 1, 1985, under the name Racal-Vodafone (Holdings) Ltd. On that very first day, the comedian Ernie Wise made the first mobile phone call in the UK. By 1986, Vodafone became a fully owned brand of Racal after a £110 million share issue. In 1991, the company underwent a major change called a demerger. This process separated Racal Telecom from Racal Electronics to create Vodafone Group Plc. Gerry Whent served as the CEO during this period of independence. This separation allowed the company to realize its full value on the stock market.
Throughout the 1990s, Vodafone expanded aggressively by acquiring other companies. In 1996, the company spent £30.6 million to acquire the remaining two-thirds of Talkland. That same year, it purchased the Peoples Phone chain for £77 million to protect its network users. In 1997, Chris Gent took over as CEO from Gerry Whent. During this era, the company also introduced its famous Speechmark logo. The logo features a quotation mark inside a circle. The "Os" in the Vodafone name represent opening and closing quotation marks to suggest conversation.
The turn of the millennium brought one of the largest corporate events in history. In 1999, Vodafone completed the purchase of the American provider AirTouch. This led to a massive, hostile takeover attempt of the German company Mannesmann. Although Mannesmann initially resisted, the board eventually agreed to an offer of £112 billion in February 2000. This remains the largest corporate merger ever recorded. To satisfy European Union antitrust rules, Vodafone had to sell the Orange brand to France Télécom. Following this period of massive growth, the company reverted to its original name, Vodafone Group Plc, in July 2000.
In recent years, Vodafone has shifted its strategy toward simplification and specialized services. In 2001, it introduced the concept of "partner networks" through a deal with TDC Mobil of Denmark. This allows Vodafone to enter new markets without needing to own the local infrastructure. Instead, they use a dual-brand scheme where the Vodafone name is added to a local brand. The company also focuses on business technology through acquisitions like Bluefish Communications and Cable & Wireless Worldwide. In 2012, the acquisition of Cable & Wireless Worldwide cost £1.04 billion. This gave Vodafone access to important fibre networks for large enterprises.
Vodafone continues to reshape the telecommunications landscape in the United Kingdom. In December 2024, the Competition and Markets Authority approved the merger of Vodafone UK and Three UK. This merger created the largest mobile network in the country. To gain approval, Vodafone made several commitments to protect consumers. These included capping mobile tariffs and investing heavily in 5G infrastructure. The company also pledged an £11 billion investment to strengthen 5G rollout. These changes aim to balance market competition with the need for modern, fast technology.
