Respiratory rate measures how many breaths a person takes every minute. For adults aged 18 to 65, the normal range is typically 16 to 20 breaths per minute. This measurement is a clear indicator of acidotic states. This happens because the main function of respiration is to remove carbon dioxide (CO2) from the body. By removing CO2, the body maintains a bicarbonate base in the blood circulation. While respiratory rate can indicate respiratory dysfunction, some studies suggest its value as a standalone indicator is limited.
Blood pressure is the force of blood moving through the body's vessels. It is recorded using two different numbers: systolic and diastolic pressure. Systolic pressure is the higher reading, occurring during the maximal contraction of the heart. Diastolic pressure is the lower reading, occurring while the heart is at rest. In adults, a normal reading is often 120/80 mmHg. The difference between these two numbers is known as the pulse pressure. 
Vital signs change significantly based on a person's age. For instance, a newborn has a heart rate between 100 and 160 bpm. As a person grows, this rate generally decreases. An infant aged 0 to 5 months typically has a heart rate of 90 to 150 bpm. A toddler aged 1 to 3 years has a rate between 80 and 130 bpm. Respiratory rates also shift, with newborns having much higher rates than adults.
In different medical settings, clinicians may include additional measurements. In the United States, providers often record height, weight, and body mass index (BMI). While these do not show acute changes, they help assess chronic health problems. Some organizations consider pain to be the "fifth vital sign," measured on a scale from 0 to 10. Other potential fifth vital signs include oxygen saturation, blood glucose levels, or the menstrual cycle. In emergency settings, EMTs might use a different set of five vitals, including skin and pupil response. Monitoring these parameters is vital because deteriorating vitals often precede cardiac arrest or intensive care admission.
Modern technology has changed how these signs are monitored. While doctors once relied on mercury sphygmomanometers, many now use electronic or aneroid versions. In intensive care units, multimodal monitors display several parameters at once. This allows staff to see continuous changes in a patient's condition. Some companies are even developing devices for consumers to monitor their own vitals at home. These advancements allow for better tracking of health trends over time.
