Veracruz is a major port city located in Mexico.
The history of Veracruz began with Spanish exploration. In 1518, Juan de Grijalva and Bernal Díaz del Castillo arrived at an island. They named it San Juan de Ulúa. The name honors the captain and the feast of John the Baptist. In 1519, Hernán Cortés founded a settlement nearby. He named it Villa Rica de la Vera Cruz. This name means "Rich Village of the True Cross." He chose this name because they landed on Good Friday. The settlement was the first on mainland America to receive a coat-of-arms. This was authorized by Carlos V in 1523.
During the colonial period, Veracruz became a massive center for trade. The city had a very large and wealthy mercantile class. At times, it was wealthier than Mexico City. Spanish treasure fleets visited the port twice every year. These voyages involved many workers like sailors, merchants, and navigators. The Spanish built roads to connect the port to cities like Córdoba and Xalapa. They exported large amounts of gold and silver. However, this wealth attracted many dangers. Pirates from rival nations frequently attacked the area.
The city has faced many military conflicts throughout its history. In 1837, the city defended itself against a French attack. This earned it the title of "Heroic City." In 1847, the United States invaded during the Mexican-American War.
Veracruz is also a place of significant cultural blending. The population has roots in indigenous, Spanish, and Afro-Caribbean cultures. This mix is very visible in local traditions. You can hear it in the music, such as Son Jarocho.
The economy of Veracruz has changed over the centuries. For much of the 20th century, petroleum production was the main economic driver for the state. However, the port has re-emerged as the primary economic engine recently. It is now the principal port for most Mexican imports and exports. The automotive industry relies heavily on this port for trade.

Today, Veracruz remains a bustling and historic coastal center. The city features many old buildings from the Spanish era. These include the cathedral and the Municipal Palace.
