It is the oldest international exhibition of its kind. People visit to see many different types of creativity. The main parts are the Art Biennale and the Architecture Biennale. These two large events switch every year. Since 2021, art shows happen in even years. Architecture shows happen in odd years. This schedule helps people focus on one major theme at a time.

There are many ways to experience the festival. Besides art and buildings, there are shows for music, theatre, film, and dance. The Venice Film Festival is a very famous part of this. Some shows happen every single year. One such show is the Venice Dance Biennale. The main art exhibition takes place in a large area called Castello. Many artists use this space to share new ideas. It is a place where the whole world meets to look at new work.

This tradition began a long time ago in 1895.

The Venetian City Council first planned it to celebrate King Umberto I and Queen Margherita. The very first exhibition opened on April 30, 1895. It was a huge success with 224,000 visitors. Over time, more countries joined the festival. In 1907, Belgium was the first country to build its own special space. By 1914, seven different countries had their own pavilions. These pavilions are permanent buildings for each nation.

History has brought many changes to the Biennale. It had to stop during World War I and World War II. The events were cancelled in 1916 and 1918. Later, the festival resumed after the wars ended. In 1930, new festivals for music and film were started. The Film Festival began in 1932.

In 1980, the Architecture section was officially added. The festival also grew to include many artists from Asia and Eastern Europe. This makes the event feel truly global today.

Today, the Biennale connects many different worlds. It brings together many different styles like Pop Art and Impressionism.

Some curators even use big ideas to guide the shows. For example, one show used the idea of an "Encyclopedic Palace." This idea was about trying to hold all the world's knowledge in one place. The Biennale does something similar with art. It tries to bring many different worlds of art into one single city. This makes it a very special place for everyone to explore.

It serves as a global stage for contemporary art, architecture, music, theatre, film, and dance. The festival is unique because it alternates its two primary components. The Art Biennale and the Architecture Biennale are held in different years. Since 2021, the Art Biennale has occurred in even-numbered years. The Architecture Biennale takes place in odd-numbered years. This structure allows the world to focus deeply on one discipline at a time.

The festival operates through several distinct components and venues. The main exhibition is centered in the Castello district. This area contains approximately 30 permanent pavilions built by different nations. These pavilions allow countries to present their own artistic identities. Beyond the two main alternating events, there are four annual components. These include festivals for music, theatre, film, and the Venice Dance Biennale. The Venice Film Festival is a particularly prominent part of this cultural ecosystem.

To understand how the Biennale works, one must look at its organization. The festival is managed through various artistic sectors. Each sector has a permanent director responsible for organizing its specific activities. Curators, or directors, select themes and artists to guide the exhibition. For example, the 2013 Art Biennale used the theme "Il Palazzo Enciclopedico," or The Encyclopedic Palace. This theme was inspired by an architectural model by Marino Auriti. It aimed to mirror the desire to concentrate infinite worlds of art in one place.

The history of the Biennale began with a specific political purpose. On April 19, 1893, the Venetian City Council passed a resolution. They wanted to celebrate the silver anniversary of King Umberto I and Margherita of Savoy. The first International Art Exhibition opened on April 30, 1895. This inaugural event was a massive success, attracting 224,000 visitors.

In the early years, the exhibition became increasingly international. In 1907, Belgium became the first country to install a national pavilion. By 1914, the number of national pavilions had grown to seven, including those for France and Russia.

Throughout the 20th century, the Biennale faced significant historical shifts. The event was interrupted during both World War I and World War II. In 1916 and 1918, the exhibitions were cancelled due to the first war. In 1942, the activities were interrupted again during the second war. Following these conflicts, the festival resumed its various sections. The Film Festival restarted in 1946, followed by music and theatre in 1947. The Art Exhibition finally resumed in 1948 with a major recapitulatory event.

The Biennale has also been a place where new art movements gain recognition. In the 1910s, it displayed famous artists like Gustav Klimt and Renoir. During the 1950s, the festival helped introduce Abstract Expressionism. In 1964, the Biennale is credited with importing Pop Art into the canon of art history. This happened when the American artist Robert Rauschenberg won the top prize. Rauschenberg was also the youngest artist to win the Gran Premio at that time.

Modern iterations of the Biennale continue to expand in scope and diversity. In the late 1990s, the exhibitions included more artists from Asia and Eastern Europe. The festival also expanded into newly restored spaces within the Arsenale. Recent decades have seen leadership from diverse international curators. Okwui Enwezor, the first African-born curator, directed the 2015 edition.
