He failed the test because he did not prepare in the usual way. He then went to the École Normale instead. In 1829, he earned his degree through the Baccalaureate exams. His math teacher said he was very intelligent and loved to research. 
Galois also cared deeply about politics in France. He was a strong supporter of the Republic. This led him to join the National Guard. He was involved in the July Revolution of 1830. Because of his political actions, he was arrested several times. He spent some time in the Sainte-Pélagie prison. He even continued to work on his math while he was in jail.
Some experts found his math very hard to follow. A mathematician named Siméon Denis Poisson called his work incomprehensible.

His academic journey was marked by struggle and unconventional methods. In 1828, he attempted the entrance exam for the prestigious École Polytechnique. He failed because he lacked standard preparation and struggled with oral explanations. He instead entered the École Normale, which was a less prestigious institution at the time. In 1829, he passed his Baccalaureate examinations to enter the École normale. His examiner noted that while his expression was sometimes obscure, he showed a remarkable spirit of research. 
Galois faced significant professional setbacks regarding the publication of his work. He submitted two papers on polynomial equations to the Academy of Sciences. The eminent mathematician Augustin-Louis Cauchy reviewed these papers. Cauchy recognized their importance but suggested combining them for a mathematics Grand Prize competition. Sadly, the memoir was lost after the Academy's secretary, Joseph Fourier, died. This prevented Galois from receiving the prize that went to Niels Henrik Abel and Carl Gustav Jacob Jacobi. 
Political activism defined much of Galois's adult life. He was a staunch Republican during the political turmoil of the 1830 July Revolution. When the director of the École Normale prevented him from participating in the revolution, Galois wrote a critical letter. This led to his expulsion from the school in 1831. He joined the Republican artillery unit of the National Guard. His political involvement led to several arrests and a period of detention in Sainte-Pélagie prison.
Even in prison, Galois continued to refine his mathematical contributions. He responded to criticism from Siméon Denis Poisson, who called his work "incomprehensible." 
His life ended abruptly due to a duel on 30 May 1832. The exact reasons for the duel remain obscure and subject to speculation. Some evidence suggests a broken love affair involving Stéphanie-Félicie Poterin du Motel. Galois died from the wounds he suffered during the fight. He was only 20 years old.
