A man named Urbain Le Verrier lived in France.
He saw a planet move in a strange way. He used math to find the cause. He thought a new planet was pulling on it. 
He wrote down where the new planet should be. He sent a letter to a friend. The friend looked through a telescope. He found the planet that very night!
This was a very big moment for science. Le Verrier worked at a place called the Paris Observatory. His name is even on the Eiffel Tower. 
He was a great thinker who used numbers to see the sky.

Le Verrier is famous for finding a new planet. He did not use a telescope to find it. Instead, he used math. He noticed that the planet Uranus was moving strangely. It did not follow the path predicted by gravity. Le Verrier thought another planet was pulling on it. He spent many months doing hard math to find this planet. 
He sent his math to a man named Johann Galle. Galle used a telescope in Berlin to look at the sky. He found Neptune that very same night! The planet was exactly where Le Verrier said it would be. This proved that math could help us see the unseen.
Le Verrier also studied Mercury. He thought a tiny planet might be near the Sun. This planet was named Vulcan, but it was never found. Later, new science explained why Mercury moves that way. Le Verrier's name is even on the Eiffel Tower.

Le Verrier also spent many years working on large tables of planetary motions. He wanted to put the whole planetary system into harmony. He studied data from as far back as 1750 to fix errors. He also looked at how Mercury moves around the Sun. In 1859, he suggested a tiny planet might exist near the Sun to explain Mercury's path. People even named this imaginary planet Vulcan. However, Vulcan was never found because a different theory later explained Mercury's movement.
Le Verrier received many honors during his life for his great work. He won the Gold Medal from the Royal Astronomical Society twice. His name is even one of the 72 names carved on the Eiffel Tower. Today, his name is used for a ring of Neptune and a crater on Mars. He died in Paris in 1877 and was buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery.

He suspected that an unseen, perturbing planet was exerting a gravitational pull on Uranus. This pull was causing the small, systematic discrepancies in the observed orbit.

In 1846, Le Verrier announced his predicted coordinates for this unknown planet. He sent his findings via letter to Johann Gottfried Galle at the Berlin Observatory. The letter arrived in Berlin on September 23, 1846. Using a Fraunhofer refractor telescope, Galle and Heinrich d'Arrest searched the sky. They found Neptune that very same night. The planet was located within 1° of the position Le Verrier had calculated. This event was a massive validation of celestial mechanics.
While Le Verrier was working, an English mathematician named John Couch Adams was also making similar calculations. However, Adams's work was not published until after the visual discovery in Berlin. Adams eventually acknowledged Le Verrier's priority in his work. There was some controversy regarding who deserved the most credit for the discovery. Despite this, the roles of Le Verrier, Galle, and d'Arrest in the actual prediction and sighting are clear. This moment remains one of the most remarkable events in 19th-century science.

Beyond Neptune, Le Verrier dedicated much of his life to creating planetary tables. He wanted to bring the entire planetary system into mathematical harmony. To do this, he re-evaluated the perturbing function, which is a method used to calculate how planets affect each other. His derivation resulted in 469 different mathematical terms by 1849. He also collected and corrected planetary observations dating all the way back to 1750. These tables became a fundamental resource for astronomical almanacs for many decades.
Le Verrier also studied the motion of Mercury. In 1859, he reported that Mercury's orbit showed a slow precession that Newtonian mechanics could not fully explain. He suggested that a planet or small particles might exist even closer to the Sun than Mercury. Astronomers called this hypothetical object Vulcan. However, no such planet was ever found. Scientists later discovered that the movement of Mercury was actually explained by the theory of general relativity.
Le Verrier had a long and distinguished career at the Paris Observatory. He served as the director of the institution during two different periods. He was a member of the French Academy of Sciences and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. He also earned the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society twice. His legacy is preserved in many places. His name is inscribed on the Eiffel Tower. It is also used for a ring of Neptune, an asteroid, and craters on both the Moon and Mars. He died in Paris in 1877 and is buried in the Montparnasse Cemetery under a stone celestial globe.
