The origins of the university are tied to the medieval church. Uppsala was already an important ecclesiastical center and a trade hub. In 1477, Pope Sixtus IV issued a papal bull to charter the university. This official document granted the school specific corporate rights. It gave Uppsala the same freedoms and privileges as the University of Bologna.
During the 16th century, the university faced a period of great instability. The Reformation led to religious shifts across Sweden. Scientific discovery also flourished during this period of growth. The scientist Olaus Rudbeck was a dominant figure at the university. He was an architect, engineer, and gifted scientist. Rudbeck helped build the anatomical theatre at the Gustavianum.

The university has also influenced the broader culture of Sweden. Many Swedish academic traditions originated within its walls.
