The history of the school began a long time ago. In 1839, a large group of people asked for better education. They signed a petition with 70,000 names. They wanted a college in the city of Madras. Later, a plan was made to build a university. The University of Madras was officially started on September 5, 1857. 
The university is spread out across the city of Chennai. It has six different campuses for students to use. These campuses are Chepauk, Marina, Guindy, Taramani, Maduravoyal, and Chetpet. 
This university has helped many other schools grow. As it expanded, it helped start many new universities in India. Some of these are Mysore University and Andhra University. The university even published a huge dictionary in Tamil. This was the first dictionary of its kind in an Indian language. The school has a special motto to guide its students. The motto is "Doctrina Vim Promovet Insitam." In English, this means "Learning promotes natural talent."

They presented this to the Governor of Madras, Lord John Elphinstone. They wanted an English college in the city. This led to the creation of a University Board in 1840. Later, a policy called Wood's despatch suggested a systematic education system for India. Following this, the University of Madras was officially incorporated on September 5, 1857. It was organized using the model of the University of London. 
As the university grew, it became a foundation for other schools. During the 19th and 20th centuries, it helped create many new universities. These include Mysore University, Osmania University, and Andhra University. At one time, its territory was very large. It stretched from Berhampur in the northeast to Trivandrum in the southwest. It also reached as far west as Bangalore and as far north as Hyderabad. The university also achieved a major linguistic milestone. Between 1926 and 1939, it published the Tamil Lexicon. This was the first dictionary published in any Indian language. 
The university is also a place of incredible scientific achievement. It houses national centers for advanced research in nanotechnology and photonics. It also studies neurotoxicity. There are three specific Centres of Advanced Study in biophysics, botany, and mathematics. The Ramanujan Institute for Advanced Study in Mathematics is located near the Chepauk campus. The university has produced many world-famous individuals. Five Presidents of India are alumni of this school. It has also produced two Nobel Prize winners in physics, CV Raman and Subrahmanyan Chandrasekhar. 
Architecture and symbols also define the university's identity. The Senate House is a famous historical monument in Chennai. It was inaugurated in 1879 and designed by Robert Fellowes Chisholm. The building uses the Indo-Saracenic style, which mixes European and Byzantine features. The university also has a unique coat of arms designed in 1857. It features a walking tiger, elephant heads, and a lotus flower. The motto is "Doctrina Vim Promovet Insitam." This translates to "Learning promotes natural talent."
