Getting around the city is easy because of many paths.

Ulyanovsk is a major administrative and industrial center in Russia. It is located on the banks of the Volga River, east of Moscow. The city serves as the headquarters for the Ulyanovsk Oblast region. Since 2015, it has held the title of UNESCO City of Literature. This designation recognizes the city's deep connection to famous writers. Ulyanovsk is also a vital hub for manufacturing, education, and transportation.
The city's history began in 1648 when Bogdan Khitrovo founded it as Simbirsk. He established a fort on a hill on the western bank of the Volga. This fort was built to protect Russia's eastern frontier from nomadic tribes. It also served to establish a royal presence in the region. In 1668, the fort survived a month-long siege by 20,000 soldiers. These soldiers were led by a Cossack commander named Stenka Razin. Later, the rebel Yemelyan Pugachev was held there before his execution.
As the Russian Empire expanded into Siberia, Simbirsk lost its military importance. However, it grew into a significant regional center for the aristocracy. The city gained official city status in 1796. In the 19th century, it featured grand buildings like the Holy Trinity Cathedral. This cathedral was built in a Neoclassical style between 1827 and 1841. Tragedy struck in the summer of 1864 when a massive fire destroyed much of the city. Despite this, Simbirsk was quickly rebuilt and continued to expand.
In 1924, the city underwent a major change when it was renamed Ulyanovsk. This change honored Vladimir Lenin, a famous political leader. Lenin was born in the city in 1870 under his birth name, Ulyanov. Other significant political figures, such as Alexander Kerensky, were also born here. During the Soviet era, the city became a popular tourist destination. People visited to see sites related to the Russian Revolution. However, tourism declined sharply after the dissolution of the Soviet Union.
Industrial changes also reshaped the local geography. In 1957, workers completed the Kuybyshev hydroelectric plant downstream. This project flooded large areas of land both north and south of the city. It also significantly increased the width of the Volga River. Today, some neighborhoods sit below the level of the new reservoir. These areas are protected by a dam to prevent flooding. Experts estimate that a dam failure could submerge 5% of the city's population.
Ulyanovsk is now a diverse industrial powerhouse. It is a major center for the aircraft and automobile industries. The UAZ plant is a key manufacturer of automobiles. The city also hosts the Aviastar-SP Aircraft Company. Other specialized facilities produce ammunition and control systems for the Navy.
Transportation is essential for this large industrial hub. The city sits where many air, rail, and river routes cross. Two major bridges span the wide Volga River. One is the Imperial Bridge, which was built between 1912 and 1916. The other is the President Bridge, which opened in 2009. This truss bridge is 5.5 km long. This length makes it one of the longest bridges in Europe.

Education and culture remain central to Ulyanovsk. Ulyanovsk State University is one of the largest institutions in the Volga region. It enrolls about 15,000 students every year. Many of these students are foreign citizens from 20 different countries. The city also hosts several technical and pedagogical universities. For recreation, the nearby region of Undory is famous for its spas. These spas use mineral water from artesian wells that is rich in sodium chloride.
