Tver is a city in Russia. It sits northwest of Moscow. The city is located right where the Volga and Tvertsa rivers meet.
The city has a very long history. People believe it was founded in the year 1135. It began as a small place for traders from Novgorod. Later, it became the capital of a strong medieval state. This state was once one of the richest in Russia. At one time, Tver even competed with Moscow for power.
Many things changed the look of Tver over time. In 1763, a huge fire hit the city. After the fire, leaders rebuilt the town in a new style. They used a style called Neoclassical for the buildings. Under the ruler Catherine the Great, the center was rebuilt. This included the famous Travel Palace.
Some old buildings in Tver are hard to find today. Most buildings from before the time of Peter the Great are gone. Only the White Trinity Church from 1564 still remains. It is made of limestone instead of the usual brick. Another old building, the Saviour Cathedral, was blown up in 1936. However, people worked to rebuild the main church in the 2010s.
Tver has also had different names throughout its life. From 1931 to 1990, the city was called Kalinin. This name came from a man named Mikhail Kalinin. The city was part of the Kalinin Oblast for many years. In 1990, the people restored the name Tver. Today, the city is divided into four main districts. These include the central part and the areas near the rivers.
Tver is a significant city located in Russia. It serves as the administrative centre of Tver Oblast. Geographically, the city sits northwest of Moscow. It is positioned at the confluence of two rivers. These are the Volga and the Tvertsa rivers.
The history of Tver began as a minor settlement. It was originally a site for Novgorodian traders. The official foundation year is accepted as 1135. By 1209, the settlement passed to the grand prince of Vladimir. In 1246, Alexander Nevsky granted the land to Yaroslav Yaroslavich. This began a dynasty of local princes. This ruling family was very powerful in the medieval period. Four members of this dynasty were killed by the Golden Horde. The Russian Orthodox Church later proclaimed these men as saints. The area was once a land of woods and bogs. However, the Principality of Tver became a very rich state. It was difficult for Tatar raids to reach the area. This safety led to a large influx of people from the south.
During the late 14th century, Tver was a major power. It vied with Moscow for supremacy in Russia. The rivalry between these two cities was intense. One famous leader was Grand Princedom Mikhail Yaroslavich. He ascended the throne of Vladimir in 1305. He was a highly revered medieval ruler. However, he was assassinated in the Golden Horde in 1318. His son, Dmitry Mikhailovich, also known as "the Terrible Eyes," took over. Dmitry formed an alliance with the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. This increased the prestige of Tver significantly. Later, Ivan Kalita of Moscow engineered Dmitry's murder by the Mongols in 1326. This event caused the city to revolt against the Mongol Horde. The rebellion was brutally repressed by the Horde and the Muscovites. Many citizens were killed, enslaved, or deported. This event ended Tver's hope for supremacy in Russia.
Despite these losses, Tver remained culturally significant. In the 14th century, the city formed many defensive alliances. These included agreements with Lithuania, Novgorod, Byzantium, and the Golden Horde. During this time, a man named Afanasy Nikitin traveled from Tver. He was sent by Boris of Tver to find gold and diamonds. His journey took him as far as India between 1466 and 1472. His travelogue is one of the first European firsthand accounts of India. A monument to Nikitin was later opened on the Volga embankment in 1955.
In 1485, the forces of Ivan III seized the city. This led to the formal annexation of Tver by Moscow. The principality was briefly given to Ivan the Young. However, the principality was abolished several decades later. The last members of the ruling dynasty were executed by Ivan the Terrible. During the era of the oprichnina, Tver was ruled by Simeon Bekbulatovich. He was a former khan of Kasimov. One remnant of his reign is a tent-like church in Kushalino. In the 18th century, Tver found new importance. It became a principal station on the highway to St. Petersburg. This route connected the old capital, Moscow, to the new one. Many Russian royals and nobles visited the city frequently.
The physical appearance of Tver changed greatly in the 1700s. A devastating fire occurred in 1763. Following this, the city was rebuilt in a Neoclassical style. This style uses classical elements from ancient Greece and Rome. Under Catherine the Great, the central part was reconstructed. Many old medieval buildings were removed. They were replaced by imposing Neoclassical structures. One famous example is the Travel Palace of the Empress. It was designed by the architect Matvei Kazakov.
Tver has also experienced many name changes. From 1931 to 1990, the city was called Kalinin. This was named after Mikhail Kalinin. He was a head of state born nearby. The city was part of the Kalinin Oblast during this time. In 1990, the original name of Tver was restored. The city is now divided into four main districts. These are Zavolzhsky, Moskovsky, Proletarsky, and Tsentralny.
