These birds belong to a family called Musophagidae. Some people call them banana-eaters because they love fruit. Other birds in this group are called plantain-eaters or go-away-birds. Go-away-birds are famous for their loud, piercing alarm calls. These calls warn other animals that a predator is near. Most turacos are medium-sized, but the great blue turaco is quite large.

These birds have a very special way of moving through trees. They have rounded wings and long tails. This shape makes them poor fliers, but they are excellent climbers. Fossil evidence provides clues about the ancient history of this family. The fossil genus Veflintornis was discovered in the Middle Miocene of France. Other fossil remains have been found in Egypt and Germany. These findings suggest that the family may have evolved in central Europe or northern Africa. Over time, they likely shifted their distribution southward. This move might have been a very slow and gradual process. During the late Paleogene, the climate in Europe was similar to the tropical Africa seen today. The Sahara Desert did not exist yet, and the Mediterranean Sea was much closer to the European coast.

Turacos are social and non-migratory birds. They typically live in gregarious family groups containing up to 10 members. Many species are quite noisy. The go-away-birds are especially famous for their piercing alarm calls. These calls are an example of onomatopoeia, as their name mimics the sound they make. On a different note, the British ornithologist Constantine Walter Benson was known to have tasted every species he collected. He claimed that turacos were the best tasting. In terms of lifespan, wild longevity is not well known. However, in captivity, they live exceptionally long lives. They can easily live to 30 years old. One bird in an English wildlife park even reached its 37th year.
