There were different ways to write these songs. One style was called trobar leu, which means light. This style was easy for people to understand. Another way was trobar ric, or rich style. This was much more complex and fancy. Some poets used trobar clus, which means closed. These songs were very hard to figure out.

The most popular type of song was called a canso. Later on, poets also wrote sirventes and tensos. These were other popular styles of song.

No one knows exactly how this tradition started.

Scholars have many different ideas about its roots. One theory says it came from Arabic music. Some people believe the word trobar comes from the Arabic word ṭaraba. This word means to provoke emotion or make music. Other scholars think it came from Latin words. These words mean to compose or invent a poem. It is a big mystery that experts still study today.

This art form began in a place called Occitania.

This area is in what we now call southern France. From there, the music spread to other lands. It moved into the Italian and Iberian Peninsulas. In Germany, people started a similar movement called Minnesang. In northern France, they were known as trouvères. Even in Portugal and Galicia, they had a style called trovadorismo.

Women were also part of this musical world. A female troubadour is called a trobairitz. This tradition did not last forever, though. The art of the troubadours began to fade in the 14th century. This happened around the time of the Black Death in 1348. Eventually, the tradition died out completely. Even so, their songs tell us so much about life long ago.

A troubadour was a specialized composer and performer of lyric poetry. They operated during the High Middle Ages, a period lasting from 1100 to 1350. These artists did more than just sing; they created complex works of art. Dante Alighieri described their work as *fictio rethorica musicaque poita*. This means their songs were a blend of rhetorical, musical, and poetical fiction.

They primarily focused on themes of chivalry and courtly love. Many of their compositions were metaphysical, intellectual, and followed specific formulas. However, some troubadours used their skills for humorous or vulgar satires.

To understand their craft, one must look at the different styles of composition. The first style was *trobar leu*, or "light" composition. This style was designed to be clear and accessible to the listener. The second style was *trobar ric*, which means "rich" composition. This method used more complex and ornate language. The third style was *trobar clus*, meaning "closed" composition. These songs were intentionally difficult and required great skill to interpret.

Within these styles, they used various song genres. The *canso* was the most popular form of song. In the post-classical period, the *sirventes* and *tensos* became especially popular genres.

The term troubadour is masculine in its etymology. Because of this, female poets in the same tradition are called *trobairitz*. While the movement began in Occitania, it spread widely across Europe. It reached the Italian and Iberian Peninsulas. In Germany, a related movement called *Minnesang* emerged. In northern France, the artists were known as *trouvères*. In Galicia and Portugal, the tradition was called *trovadorismo*. This shows how deeply the culture of lyric poetry influenced the entire continent.

The exact origins of the troubadour tradition remain a subject of intense academic debate. There are at least eleven competing theories regarding where these ideas began. One prominent theory suggests an Arabic influence from the Iberian Peninsula. Some scholars believe the word *trobar* comes from the Arabic *ṭaraba*, meaning to provoke emotion or make music. Others suggest a connection to the Arabic root *ḍ–r–b*, which relates to striking a musical instrument. Even the works of William IX of Aquitaine contain lines that some scholars believe show Arabic influence.

Other researchers look to different roots for the tradition. The Bernardine-Marianist theory suggests that Christian theology influenced the genre. This theory points to the emphasis on spiritual love and devotion to the Virgin Mary. Another possibility is the Classical Latin theory. This theory notes parallels between troubadour lyrics and the works of the Roman poet Ovid. Some also suggest a connection to the Christian liturgy and hymnody. Many troubadours were trained musically by the Church and studied grammar through Latin.

The social structure of the time also played a role in this art form. The Feudal-social theory suggests the tradition arose from the specific circumstances of medieval life. For example, the influence of a lord's wife while he was away might have driven certain lyrical themes. Some scholars even look to the survival of pre-Christian warrior codes or matriarchal societies. These social systems helped shape the unique concept of courtly love. The movement was not just about music, but about the complex social interactions of the era.

The troubadour era eventually came to an end. The art form saw a resurgence around the turn of the 13th century. However, it began to decline significantly during the 14th century. This decline coincided with the arrival of the Black Death in 1348. Following this period, the specific tradition of the troubadours died out. Despite their disappearance, their influence on European poetry and music remains a vital part of cultural history.
