The rain is very heavy and constant. In a true rainforest, every month has a lot of rain. This constant water can wash nutrients out of the ground. This process is called leaching. Because of this, the soil is often acidic and poor in nutrients.

The forest floor is the bottom layer. It is dark because only 2% of sunlight reaches it. The understory layer is above the floor. It has small trees and plants with large leaves to catch light. Above that is the canopy layer. This layer forms a thick roof of leaves. It contains most of the largest trees.
