The climate drives a specific cycle in the soil. High levels of rainfall lead to a process called leaching. Leaching occurs when heavy rain washes soluble nutrients deep into the ground. This process results in soils that are nutrient-poor and acidic. Because the soil lacks nutrients, the flora and fauna must adapt. The plants and animals have evolved to thrive in these specific conditions.
Life in the rainforest is organized into distinct vertical layers, or strata. Each layer is a unique biotic community. The forest floor is the bottom-most layer. It is quite dark because only 2% of sunlight reaches it. The understory layer sits above the floor. It contains shade-tolerant shrubs and large woody vines. 
Each layer hosts different types of life. The forest floor is relatively clear of vegetation due to low light. This openness allows large animals like the okapi, tapir, and western lowland gorilla to move easily. 

Tropical rainforests are incredibly rich in biodiversity. They are home to 40% to 75% of all biotic species on Earth. This includes half of the world's animal and plant species. Two-thirds of all flowering plant species live in these forests. The scale of life is massive. A single hectare may contain 42,000 different insect species. It can also hold up to 807 trees from 313 different species.
These forests have a very long history. They have existed on Earth for hundreds of millions of years. Many modern rainforests sit on fragments of the Mesozoic era supercontinent called Gondwana. When Gondwana broke apart, it left rainforests in five major regions. These include tropical America, Africa, Southeast Asia, Madagascar, and New Guinea. 
Today, tropical rainforests face serious threats from human activity. Logging and agricultural expansion cause habitat fragmentation. Fragmentation occurs when large habitats are broken into smaller, isolated pieces. This process is a major cause of species extinction. Human-driven destruction is happening much faster than past geological changes. International programs like REDD and REDD+ aim to curb deforestation. These policies focus on reducing emissions from forest degradation. Balancing human development with conservation remains a major global challenge.
