This was against Javanese traditions. To stop them from marrying others, the king confined Tya and her sister. They were kept in the kaputren, which was the ladies' quarter of the palace. They were locked in a well-guarded area for many years. Their mother, Queen Gayatri, worked hard to try and free them.
After King Jayanegara died in 1328, a contest was held to marry the princesses. Two noblemen won this contest. One man named Cakradhara married Tya. He became known as the Prince consort Kertawardhana. They were described as a very devout Buddhist couple. The couple had two children together. Their eldest child was a boy named Dyah Hayam Wuruk. He was born in 1334 and grew up to be a great king. Their youngest child was a girl named Dyah Nertaja.

In 1331, she even led her own army to battle. She fought to stop rebellions in Sadeng and Keta. In 1334, she made Gajah Mada her prime minister. He made a famous vow called the Palapa oath. He promised to expand the empire across the many islands.
Under her rule, the Majapahit Empire grew very large. In 1343, the empire conquered the island of Bali. Her cousin, Adityawarman, helped conquer other areas like Sumatra. In 1350, her mother died, and Tribhuwana stepped down from the throne. She gave the crown to her son, Hayam Wuruk. She did not stop helping the empire, though. She served on a council of royal elders to give advice. Later, people honored her as a goddess in a temple.

Life in the palace was difficult for the young princesses. After their father died in 1309, Jayanegara became king. He wanted to marry his own half-sisters, Tya and Wiyat. This was against Javanese tradition. To prevent them from marrying other suitors, the king confined them. They were locked in the kaputren, which was the ladies' quarter of the palace. They were kept in a well-guarded compound for many years. Their mother, Queen Gayatri, worked hard to try to free them from this captivity.
Following the death of King Jayanegara in 1328, a contest was held to find husbands for the princesses. Two noblemen won the contest. Tya married a man named Cakradhara. He became known as the Prince consort Kertawardhana, or Bhre Tumapel. The two were described as a very devout Buddhist couple. They had two children together. Tribhuwana ascended to the throne in 1329. She took power under the guidance of her mother, Gayatri. She governed alongside her husband, Kertawardhana. In 1334, she appointed Gajah Mada as her Mahapatih. The Mahapatih is a title similar to a Prime Minister.
Under the leadership of Tribhuwana and Gajah Mada, the empire grew rapidly. Gajah Mada took the famous Palapa oath during his inauguration. This was a vow to expand the empire's influence across the entire archipelago. In 1343, the Majapahit conquered the island of Bali. This included the Kingdom of Pejeng and Dalem Bedahulu. In 1347, Adityawarman was sent to conquer the Melayu Kingdom and parts of Srivijaya. He was later promoted to the rank of uparaja, or lower king, in Sumatra.
Tribhuwana's reign ended in 1350 when her mother, Gayatri, died. Because she had ruled under Gayatri's authority, Tribhuwana had to abdicate. She gave the throne to her son, Hayam Wuruk. However, she remained active in the government. She was appointed as the Bhre Kahuripan for a second time. She also joined the Bhattara Saptaprabhu, which was a council of royal elders. This council provided important advice to the king.
After her death, the queen was honored with a grand Hindu cremation ceremony. In Javanese culture, monarchs were often seen as incarnations of gods. This concept is known as devaraja. Because of this, she was posthumously deified as the goddess Parvati. A temple called Rimbi in East Java was dedicated to her soul. Her life remains a significant part of the history of the Majapahit Empire.
