Because of this, they were called "primitive prosimians." Later, they were moved into their own order, Scandentia. The fossil record for these animals is quite poor. One possible old fossil is Eodendrogale parva from China. Other fossils have been found in Thailand, Pakistan, and India. Most of these fossils belong to the Tupaiidae family.

Reproduction for treeshrews happens in specific ways. Females live in small family groups. These groups defend a territory using scent or urine. A female has a gestation period of 45 to 50 days. She gives birth to up to three young. The babies live in nests made of dry leaves. These nests are usually inside tree hollows. The young are born hairless and blind. They can leave the nest after about one month. The mother provides very little care. She only visits to suckle them for a few minutes every other day. They reach sexual maturity after about four months.
