These do not have motors and only move when the user pushes the belt with their feet.

The history of treadmill technology includes several distinct functional stages. Roughly 4,000 years ago, muscle-powered treadmills originated to perform heavy tasks like lifting water buckets. These early designs included horizontal bars driven by animals like oxen, vertical wheels similar to hamster wheels, or sloped moving platforms. In 1818, an English engineer named Sir William Cubitt introduced a different type of treadmill for use in prisons. These punishment devices featured large wheels, often 20 feet long, with steps around a six-foot cylinder. Prisoners had to climb these wheels for six or more hours a day, sometimes climbing up to 14,000 vertical feet.

The transition to the modern exercise machine involved several key scientific and commercial developments. In 1952, Robert Bruce and Wayne Quinton at the University of Washington invented a treadmill to diagnose heart and lung diseases. Later, in the late 1960s, mechanical engineer William Staub developed the first consumer treadmill for home use. Staub was inspired by the book *Aerobics* by Kenneth H. Cooper, which argued that short periods of running improved physical condition. Staub produced his first model, the PaceMaster 600, in New Jersey. Technology has also allowed treadmills to be used in extreme environments, such as outer space.

On the International Space Station, astronauts use specialized equipment like the Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill. Because there is no gravity to hold them down, astronauts must use a safety harness or bungee system to stay attached to the machine. Beyond space and medicine, treadmills serve various niche purposes. Some are used for manual locomotion therapy to help stroke patients relearn how to walk. Others are oversized to accommodate professional athletes, such as sprinters who reach very high speeds.

Using a treadmill offers several specific advantages and disadvantages for physical training. One major benefit is that it allows for an indoor exercise regime regardless of the weather. It also provides a controlled environment where users can simulate different terrains, such as rolling hills, through incline settings. The ability to track distance, calories, and heart rate provides immediate data for progress. However, there are drawbacks to consider. Some runners may develop poor running habits on a treadmill that become noticeable when they return to running outdoors. Additionally, while cushioned decks can reduce impact, the mechanical nature of the machine differs from natural ground surfaces.
