The very first line began operating on 15 January 2004. At first, the rides were free for two weeks. Commercial service officially started on 1 February 2004. In 2015, there were only 605 buses in the system. By 2020, that number grew to 4,300 buses. As of March 2026, the system serves about 1.4 million passengers every single day. The cost for a ride has stayed at Rp 3,500 since the start.

You might notice that many of these buses are changing. The city is working hard to use cleaner energy. They are adding many electric buses to the fleet right now. There are currently 470 electric buses in use. The goal is to have 50 percent of all buses be electric by 2027. By the year 2030, the city wants the whole system to use electric buses. Some feeders are partially integrated with BRT shelters. Others are fully disintegrated and use pedestrian bus stops. Smaller buses known as "Mikrotrans" also help move people through the city.

The history of Transjakarta began with a search for practical solutions. In 2001, Governor Sutiyoso proposed several transportation modes for Jakarta. These included Mass-rapid transit (MRT) and a monorail system. However, the MRT required massive foreign investments that were difficult to secure. Indonesia had lost investor confidence following the 1998 fall of the New Order regime. The BRT was chosen because it could be realized quickly without large foreign capital. The Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP) assisted in the planning.

Transportation consultants from PT Pamintori Cipta also helped design the initial concept.

Since its launch, the system has seen massive growth in scale and usage. The first line opened on 15 January 2004. It was free for the first two weeks of service. Commercial operations officially began on 1 February 2004. The passenger numbers have risen dramatically over the years. In 2015, the system carried 331,000 passengers per day. By 2018, that number reached a record 730,000 passengers daily. As of March 2026, the average daily ridership is 1.4 million people.

Transjakarta is currently undergoing a major technological shift toward sustainability. The fleet is moving away from traditional engines toward electric power. Currently, the system operates about 5,000 buses in total. Out of these, 470 are already electric buses.

This massive infrastructure is vital to the daily movement of millions in Jakarta.
