They sit in Antarctica. These mountains stretch across the whole continent. They divide the land into East Antarctica and West Antarctica. The range goes from the Ross Sea to the Weddell Sea. It is one of the longest ranges on Earth.

Most of Antarctica is covered in thick ice. But these mountains have some bare spots. The McMurdo Dry Valleys are one such place. They have no snow or ice. This is because it hardly ever rains there.

The Transantarctic Mountains are a huge mountain range in Antarctica.

They stretch across the entire continent from the Ross Sea to the Weddell Sea. Because they go all the way across, they divide the land into East Antarctica and West Antarctica. This range is one of the longest on Earth. It is made of uplifted rocks, mostly sedimentary layers. These layers sit on top of older rocks like granite.

Many parts of the range have their own special names. These names often describe smaller groups of mountains within the larger range.

Most of Antarctica is hidden under thick ice. However, these mountains have some very special dry spots. The McMurdo Dry Valleys are a famous example of this. These valleys have almost no snow or ice at all. This happens because it hardly ever rains or snows there.

The mountains also have large summits that rise high above sea level. Huge glaciers flow through the mountains from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet. These glaciers move toward the sea and help shape the landscape.

Explorers first saw these mountains a long time ago. Captain James Clark Ross first spotted them in 1841. He saw them from the Ross Sea. Later, the British National Antarctic Expedition crossed the range between 1901 and 1904.

Robert Falcon Scott led a group that crossed into East Antarctica in 1903. Ernest Shackleton also crossed through the Beardmore Glacier in 1908. Other explorers like Roald Amundsen used different paths to cross. Much more of the range was mapped using planes in the 1940s and 1950s. The name we use today was chosen in 1960.

There are many interesting facts about the life and rocks here. Along the Ross Sea coast, you can find seals and sea birds. In the dry middle parts, life is much smaller. Only tiny things like bacteria, algae, and fungi live there.

A planned road will use the Leverett Glacier to move things. This path will connect McMurdo Station to the South Pole Station. This helps scientists study the frozen world. The Transantarctic Mountains, often called the TAM, are a massive mountain range in Antarctica.

This range stretches across the entire width of the continent. It runs from Cape Adare in northern Victoria Land to Coats Land. Because of this position, the mountains serve as a major boundary. They divide the continent into two distinct regions: East Antarctica and West Antarctica. The range spans between the Ross Sea and the Weddell Sea. It is recognized as one of the longest mountain ranges on Earth.

The geology of the TAM is quite unique compared to other parts of Antarctica. Most other mountains on the continent are volcanic in origin. However, the TAM consists of uplifted rock, which is primarily sedimentary. These sedimentary layers sit upon a basement made of granites and gneisses. The layers include the Beacon Supergroup, which contains sandstones, siltstones, and coal. These were deposited between the Silurian and Jurassic periods. In many areas, Jurassic-age Ferrar Dolerite has intruded these layers as dikes and sills.

This mountain range formed through a specific geological process. It was uplifted during the opening of the West Antarctic Rift System. This process began about 65 million years ago during the early Cenozoic era. Soon after this uplift, glaciers began to occupy the range. Today, ice from the East Antarctic Ice Sheet flows through the mountains. It moves through a series of outlet glaciers toward the sea. These glaciers generally flow perpendicular to the direction of the range. They flow into the Ross Sea, the Ross Ice Shelf, and the West Antarctic Ice Sheet.

Scientists study these glaciers to understand how ice moves across the continent. Some researchers believe these outlet glaciers follow large-scale geologic faults. However, new data from ice-penetrating radar surveys may change these theories. These surveys revealed three previously unknown deep subglacial valleys. These valleys exist beneath the ice divide. This mountainous subglacial topography likely impacts how we calculate ice flow models. Understanding these hidden valleys is vital for studying the entire region.

The history of exploring the TAM is filled with famous names. Captain James Clark Ross first sighted the range in 1841. He viewed the mountains from the Ross Sea. The range acted as a natural barrier for early explorers. To reach the South Pole from the Ross Ice Shelf, one had to cross these mountains. The first successful crossing occurred during the British National Antarctic Expedition from 1901 to 1904. In 1903, Robert Falcon Scott crossed into East Antarctica via the Ferrar Glacier.

Other explorers used different paths through the rugged terrain. In 1908, Ernest Shackleton crossed the mountains through the Beardmore Glacier. Roald Amundsen also crossed the range using the Axel Heiberg Glacier. Much of the area remained unknown until the late 1940s and 1950s. During this time, missions like Operation Highjump used aerial photography. The International Geophysical Year also helped investigate the continent thoroughly. The name "Transantarctic Mountains" was finally applied by geologist Warren B. Hamilton in 1960.

Life in the TAM varies depending on the location. Along the Ross Sea coastline, you can find penguins, seals, and sea birds. However, the interior is much harsher. Life there is limited to bacteria, lichens, algae, and fungi. The mountains also contain rare ice-free areas. The McMurdo Dry Valleys are a famous example of this phenomenon. These valleys have very little snow or ice. This is due to extremely limited precipitation and the ablation of ice.

Finally, the TAM holds clues to the ancient history of Earth. The sedimentary formations contain many fossils. These fossils show that Antarctica was once much warmer. Long ago, forests of Wollemi pines and southern beeches covered the land. These forests disappeared as the climate cooled during the break-up of Gondwana. It is believed the last trees on the continent were located in the Transantarctic Mountains. Today, the mountains remain a key site for scientific study and supply routes. For example, the Leverett Glacier is a planned route for overland supplies. This will connect McMurdo Station to the Amundsen–Scott South Pole Station.
