The transition from manual to automatic control provided massive economic benefits for growing cities. In the 1920s, the use of automatic timers allowed cities to replace human traffic officers. For example, New York City was able to reassign 5,500 of its 6,000 traffic squad officers. This shift saved the city an estimated $12,500,000. As technology progressed, computers began to take over signal management in the 1950s. Denver, Colorado, used computerized control in 1952, and Toronto, Canada, became a leader in 1967. Toronto's advanced computers managed 159 signals through telephone lines to detect vehicles more effectively.
Modern signals often feature additional components to handle complex traffic patterns. Many signal heads include arrows to indicate "filter movements," which allow traffic to turn in a specific direction. Some designs, known as "cluster heads" or "doghouses," organize multiple lights and arrows into a single vertical column. In Australia and New Zealand, cluster signals may use six different lights, including a separate red arrow. Other regions use unique methods, such as the "advance green" or flashing green light seen in parts of Canada.
In some countries, countdown lights are used to provide even more information to drivers. 
Despite their benefits, traffic light systems can present specific challenges and safety dilemmas. In South Korea, the amber light "dilemma zone" is not legally recognized. This means drivers are legally required not to enter an intersection on amber, even if stopping suddenly is unsafe. This has led to concerns about collisions caused by abrupt braking. Another issue is the "yellow trap," which can occur when a turning driver assumes oncoming traffic will stop when the light turns amber. To prevent this, the United States bans certain signal sequences that might cause such a trap. These technological and legal complexities show how vital precise signaling is to modern transportation systems.
