In the 16th century, Shibam had many tall houses made of mud bricks. They are called the "Manhattan of the desert."

Building very high can be hard. Engineers must think about wind and strong ground. Firefighters also face challenges in tall towers. They must use special tools like ladders.

These structures can be used for many different things. Some people live in them as residential towers. Others use them as office buildings or hotels. Some even have shops on the bottom floors. When a building is very tall, we call it a skyscraper.

Building high requires very strong materials to stay standing.

Most skyscrapers in North America use a steel frame for support. Residential apartment blocks are usually built using reinforced concrete instead. These materials help the building handle its own heavy weight. Engineers must also think about the ground underneath the building. They check if the soil is soft or has high compressibility. They also design buildings to handle wind and even earthquakes.

Some towers use setbacks, which are steps in the building's shape. Setbacks help let more sunlight reach the ground below.

Tall buildings have been around for a very long time.

In Ancient Rome, people lived in tall buildings called insulae. Some of these had as many as 200 stairs. In the 10th and 11th centuries, buildings in Egypt were very tall too. Some even had roof gardens with water wheels for plants. In the 16th century, the city of Shibam built many tower houses. These houses are made of mud bricks and are very high. Some of these mud buildings are more than 30 meters tall.

History shows how different people solved the problem of height.

In the 13th century, Florence made a law to limit building heights. In China, the Hakka people built large, enclosed earth buildings called tulou. These could house up to 80 families at once. In the late 1800s, new tools helped manage tall buildings. A company called Magirus showed a sliding ladder in 1864. By 1904, they made extension ladders motorized. These inventions helped firefighters reach people living in high places.

Today, tower blocks are a common sight in cities everywhere.

In Britain, architects once tried a style called "streets in the sky." They built walkways between floors to act like real streets. They hoped these would include shops and community areas. Some modern towers use many different styles like Art Deco. The tallest apartment building in the world is the Central Park Tower.

These buildings serve many different purposes in modern society. Some are residential towers used for housing many people. Others function as office towers, hotels, or retail spaces. When a high-rise reaches an extreme height, it is called a skyscraper.

These structures are vital for high population density. They allow more inhabitants to live per unit of land area. This efficiency also helps decrease the cost of municipal infrastructure.

Constructing these massive structures requires advanced engineering and specific materials.

Most North American skyscrapers utilize a steel frame for their structural system. In contrast, residential apartment blocks are usually constructed from reinforced concrete. Engineers must solve complex problems related to the building's foundation. They must account for geotechnical risk factors like high compressibility in the soil. They also design for seismically active regions to protect against earthquakes. Wind is another major factor that engineers must study. Many high-rises use setbacks, which are stepping designs in the building's shape. Setbacks help transmit more daylight to the ground and reduce wind exposure.

Different organizations use different rules to define what a high-rise is.

Emporis defines a high-rise as a structure between 12 and 39 floors. The New Shorter Oxford English Dictionary simply describes them as buildings with many storeys. In the United States, the National Fire Protection Association uses a height of seven stories as a limit. Many professionals, including architects and inspectors, define a high-rise as being at least 75 feet or 23 meters tall. The International Conference on Fire Safety defines them by how height impacts evacuation safety.

Tall buildings have a long history dating back to antiquity.

In Ancient Rome, people lived in multi-story buildings called insulae. Some of these structures reportedly reached ten or more stories. Roman emperors like Augustus even tried to set height limits to prevent collapses. In the 10th and 11th centuries, buildings in Arab Egypt were also very tall. Some reached 14 stories and featured roof gardens with ox-drawn water wheels. In the 16th century, the city of Shibam built tower houses made of mud bricks. These buildings are the tallest mud structures in the world, with some exceeding 30 meters.

History shows various ways cultures have used vertical space for defense or status.

In medieval Italy, the city of Bologna had between 80 and 100 residential towers. In 1251, Florence passed a law limiting building heights to less than 26 meters. In China, the Hakka people built large, fortified earth buildings called tulou. These communal structures could house up to 80 families in a single complex. The development of modern high-rises was also shaped by fire safety needs. In 1864, Magirus introduced a sliding ladder, and by 1904, they created motorized extension ladders. These tools helped define the height limits for building regulations.

Modern architecture has seen many different styles for these tall structures.

After World War II, many projects embraced a uniform international style. Some architects, like Le Corbusier, used rough-cast concrete for his Unité d'Habitation. In Britain, the "streets in the sky" concept emerged in the 1960s and 1970s. This design included walkways intended to act like community streets within the block. While some designs like the Trellick Tower are famous, others like the Hulme Crescents faced many problems. Today, designers use many styles, including Art Deco, Postmodernism, and even neo-futurist designs.

Managing a high-rise requires complex internal systems to keep residents safe and comfortable.

Buildings must include HVAC systems for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. They also require standpipe systems and fire sprinkler systems to manage emergencies. Because height makes evacuation difficult, these systems are strictly regulated. Firefighters face unique challenges when responding to calls in these structures. Currently, the Central Park Tower in Manhattan stands as the tallest high-rise apartment building in the world. These buildings remain a central feature of almost every densely populated urban area globally.
