Toshiba is a massive Japanese multinational electronics corporation.
The company's history is built from two very old foundations. One part began with Tanaka Seisakusho, founded by Tanaka Hisashige on July 11, 1875. Tanaka was a very productive inventor-engineer from the Edo period. This company was the first in Japan to make telegraph equipment. After Tanaka died in 1881, the company grew by making torpedoes for the Navy. However, it eventually lost money and was taken over by Mitsui Bank in 1893. It was then renamed Shibaura Seisakusho.
The second part of the merger was Tokyo Denki. This company was started in 1890 by Miyoshi Shōichi. They specialized in making lightbulbs using bamboo filaments. They faced hard competition from imported goods that were cheaper and better. In 1905, Tokyo Denki renamed itself Tokyo Denki, or Tokyo Electric. They began a technological partnership with General Electric. This partnership helped them use American technology for bulb-making.
In 1939, these two separate paths joined together. Shibaura Seisakusho and Tokyo Denki merged to form Tokyo Shibaura Denki. This new company was often called "Toshiba" as a nickname. The name was officially changed to Toshiba Corporation in 1978.
Toshiba has been responsible for many technological firsts. They created radar in 1912 and the TAC digital computer in 1954. They also developed the transistor television and the microwave oven in 1959. In the world of computing, they released the first mass-market laptop in 1985.
However, the company faced very difficult challenges during the 2010s. An accounting scandal hurt their reputation significantly. Their subsidiary, the nuclear energy company Westinghouse, went bankrupt in 2017. This was a major event because Toshiba had bought Westinghouse for $5.4 billion in 2006. To survive, Toshiba had to sell many of its businesses. They even exited the personal computer market in 2020 by selling it to Dynabook Inc.
Recently, the company has undergone a massive change in ownership. In 2023, a consortium led by Japan Industrial Partners purchased Toshiba. This purchase caused the company to become private. As a result, Toshiba was delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange. This ended its 74-year history as a public company. It was no longer part of major indices like the Nikkei 225. Despite these changes, the company remains a major player in global technology systems.
