The tomb of Tutankhamun, known to archaeologists as KV62, is a significant archaeological site in Egypt's Valley of the Kings.

It served as the final resting place for a pharaoh of the Eighteenth Dynasty. This tomb is unique because it is relatively small and lacks extensive decoration compared to other royal tombs from the New Kingdom. Most experts believe KV62 was originally intended for a non-royal individual. It was likely adapted for Tutankhamun after his premature death.

The tomb consists of four distinct chambers, an entrance staircase, and a corridor. Because the space was limited, the funerary objects were densely packed together. These goods included coffins, furniture, clothing, and intricate jewelry.

The tomb remained largely intact for thousands of years. This happened because its low position in the valley floor allowed debris from flooding to hide the entrance. This layer of alluvium protected the site from the widespread looting that affected other royal tombs.

Tutankhamun's reign occurred during the transition away from the Amarna Period. He took the throne as a child following the death of Akhenaten. Akhenaten had radically changed Egyptian religion by worshipping only the deity Aten. Tutankhamun worked to restore traditional religious practices. To signal this change, he changed his name from Tutankhaten to Tutankhamun. This new name honored the god Amun. His queen also changed her name from Ankhesenpaaten to Ankhesenamun to honor the traditional pantheon.

History shows that the tomb faced challenges even in ancient times. Within a few years of the burial, robbers entered the tomb twice. Officials managed to repair and repack some of the damaged goods after these events.

After Tutankhamun died, the leader Ay became pharaoh. Some historians suggest Ay may have used Tutankhamun's small tomb to save a larger tomb for himself. Later, the general Horemheb succeeded Ay. Horemheb attempted to erase the memory of the Amarna Period by dismantling monuments from that era.

The tomb was rediscovered on November 4, 1922. This excavation was led by Howard Carter and his patron, George Herbert, the 5th Earl of Carnarvon.

They found the first step of the staircase after years of searching. On November 26, the team reached the antechamber. The discovery of spectacular burial goods triggered a global media frenzy called "Tutmania." This event became the most famous find in the history of Egyptology. It provided deep insight into the material culture of wealthy ancient Egyptians.

Clearing the tomb was a massive scientific undertaking. It took ten digging seasons to record and conserve the contents. Carter worked alongside chemist Alfred Lucas and photographer Harry Burton.

The process faced legal disputes between Carter and the Egyptian government regarding access. Eventually, an agreement ensured most artifacts went to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. The clearance of the entire tomb was finally completed in November 1930. Some items were not fully conserved until 1932.

Most treasures are now housed in the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza. However, the mummy and the sarcophagus remain in the original tomb. Heavy tourist traffic and flooding have caused damage to the site over time. To protect the original structure, a replica of the burial chamber was built nearby. This allows visitors to experience the site while reducing pressure on the ancient stone.
