His role expanded quickly from women's clothing to menswear and shoes. By 1994, he was promoted to Creative Director, the person who leads the entire design vision. Under his leadership, Gucci's sales increased by 90% between 1995 and 1996. By 1999, the company's value had grown to more than $4 billion.

Ford's influence extended to the label Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) after Gucci acquired it in 1999. He was named Creative Director for YSL, helping to bring the classic house back into the mainstream. His work often involved provocative advertising campaigns for YSL fragrances, such as Opium and M7. These campaigns were sometimes controversial due to their bold imagery. Despite such criticisms, Ford earned numerous awards from the Council of Fashion Designers of America. In 2004, he left the Gucci Group following disagreements over corporate control.
