Instead, water comes from the Atoyac-Zahuapan basin and the Atlangatepec dam. Most farming depends on the rain that falls during the summer.

Tlaxcala has a very long and interesting history. The name comes from an ancient word meaning "crag" or "place of corn tortillas."

Long ago, the Tlaxcaltec people lived there in an organized civilization. They were famous for making allies with the Spanish to defeat the Aztecs. This helped their land stay mostly the same for 300 years. The Spanish founded the city of Tlaxcala between 1520 and 1525. It was given the name New City of Our Lady of the Assumption. Later, in 1857, it officially became a state of Mexico.

Today, many people in Tlaxcala work in agriculture and industry. Farmers grow important crops like maize, barley, wheat, and beans. They also raise beef cattle, dairy cows, and even fighting bulls. Some areas focus on making things in small factories. These factories make clothes, paper, and even parts for cars. There are also many markets called tianguis where people buy goods.

Tlaxcala is a federal state located in east-central Mexico. It is one of the 32 federal entities that make up the country. Tlaxcala is unique because it is the smallest state in the Mexican republic. It covers only 0.2% of the total national territory. The state is situated in a high-altitude region known as the altiplano.

To the east, the landscape is dominated by the Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range. The state is bordered by the states of Puebla, Hidalgo, and México. It is a land-locked territory, meaning it has no coastline on an ocean.

The physical geography of Tlaxcala is quite complex and varied. The average altitude is 2,230 meters above sea level. This makes the state slightly higher than the Valley of Mexico to the southwest. Much of the terrain is rugged, featuring many ridges and deep valleys. Large igneous rock formations also protrude from the ground.

The eastern portion contains the massive La Malinche volcano. This peak reaches a height of 4,461 meters.

Because of the high mountains and the Intertropical Convergence Zone, the climate changes based on location. The high elevations are often temperate and may experience frost in the winter. The lower, flatter areas are much drier and warmer.

Vegetation in Tlaxcala changes depending on the altitude and moisture. In the mountain highlands, you will find forests of pine-oak, juniper, and temperate fir. The flatter regions have a much drier climate. These areas are characterized by agaves and prickly pear cactus. Tlaxcala does not have any large rivers or major lakes. Instead, water comes from the Atlangatepec dam and the Atoyac-Zahuapan basin. This makes the state very dependent on seasonal weather patterns.

The history of Tlaxcala is deeply tied to its name and its people. The name Tlaxcala likely comes from an ancient word meaning "crag." An alternative theory suggests it means "place of corn tortillas."

This is supported by an Aztec glyph showing two hands holding a tortilla. The Tlaxcaltec people lived in an organized civilization long before the 15th century. They famously allied with the Spanish to defeat the Aztecs. This alliance allowed their territory to remain mostly intact during 300 years of colonial rule. The Spanish founded the city of Tlaxcala between 1520 and 1525. It was originally named New City of Our Lady of the Assumption. Tlaxcala became an official state of the federation in 1857.

Today, the economy relies on agriculture, light industry, and tourism. About 60% of the land is used for farming crops like maize, barley, wheat, and beans. The state also raises livestock, including beef cattle, dairy cows, and fighting bulls. Because surface water is limited, 88% of agriculture depends on the summer rainy season. This makes the economy vulnerable to weather events like El Niño.

Industry is also important, with many factories producing textiles, paper, and automobile parts. Many of these businesses are small, family-owned enterprises.

Tourism is a major part of life in Tlaxcala, focusing on ancient history. The state contains more than 1,000 archaeological sites. One famous site is Cacaxtla, which was rediscovered by farmers in 1975.

Tlaxcala also holds significant religious and colonial history. It is home to some of the earliest colonial architecture in Mexico. The oldest church in the country was built here in 1521. The first monasteries were also established in the state in 1524. These structures connect the modern state to its Spanish colonial past. By studying the ruins and the old cities, people can see how the Tlaxcaltec culture and Spanish influence merged over hundreds of years.
