Geologist Elliott Arnold has studied evidence of increased aridity in the region. Aridity refers to how dry a climate is. A severe drought likely disrupted local agricultural systems. This environmental change may have played a key role in the society's end. 
Tiwanaku is famous for its incredible stone architecture. The Akapana is a large mound shaped like a "half Andean Cross." It is 257 meters wide and 16.5 meters tall. Another major structure is the Pumapunku, a T-shaped terraced platform. The Pumapunku contains the largest stone block at the site. This block, part of the Plataforma Lítica, is estimated to weigh 131 metric tonnes. The second-largest block weighs about 85 metric tonnes. 
Other important structures include the Kalasasaya and the Semi-Subterranean Temple. The Kalasasaya is a large courtyard containing the Gateway of the Sun. This gateway features carvings of animals and beings. Some believe these carvings represent a unique calendar system. The Semi-Subterranean Temple is a square sunken courtyard. Its walls are decorated with many different styles of tenon heads. 

The builders used advanced methods to construct these monuments. Some theories suggest they used a standard measurement called a luk’a. Others propose they used the Pythagorean Ratio to create right triangles. This would involve a 5:4:3 ratio for their gateways. Researchers also note that the builders used a system of proportions. This allowed them to scale structures from small to monumental sizes. This skill shows a sophisticated knowledge of descriptive geometry. 
Tiwanaku also had deep connections to other ancient cultures. It shared iconography, or visual symbols, with the Wari civilization. This shared style is called the Southern Andean Iconographic Series. This connection may have been based on trade or military ties. The Inca civilization also showed architectural similarities to Tiwanaku. This suggests the Inca may have taken inspiration from earlier Andean builders. The site remains a vital link to understanding ancient South American history.
