Long ago, Tidore was a powerful place. It was a center for the spice trade. A ruling family, called a sultanate, held much power. They were rivals with the nearby land of Ternate. Later, the Spanish and the Dutch also came to the area. Many people lived and traded there for hundreds of years. Today, over 121,000 people live in the Tidore Islands City.
Tidore is a city and an archipelago in the Maluku Islands. It is located in eastern Indonesia. The area is part of the North Maluku Province.
The geography of Tidore is shaped by volcanoes. The main island is a large stratovolcano. This means it is a volcano built up by many layers of ash and lava. A peak called Kie Matubu sits at the south end. It rises high above the sea. The northern side of the island has a large crater called Sabale. Inside this crater, you can see two smaller volcanic cones. To the south, three more small islands sit in a line. These are the summits of separate volcanoes named Mare, Moti, and Makian.
History shows that Tidore was once a very strong power. In the 15th century, it became a center for the spice trade. A ruling group called the Sultanate of Tidore grew very wealthy from spices. They were fierce rivals with the nearby Sultanate of Ternate. The sultans ruled many islands, including parts of Halmahera and even islands near New Guinea. Islam began to spread to the area in the late 14th and 15th centuries. This history made the islands a major political and economic center.
Many different groups arrived in Tidore over the centuries. In the 16th century, the Tidorese made an alliance with the Spanish. The Spanish even built several forts on the island. This helped Tidore resist the Ternateans and the Dutch. Later, the Dutch tried to control the spice trade through a program called extirpatie. This program limited spice production and made life hard for the people. A leader named Prince Nuku even led a long war to fight back against Dutch control. He eventually helped the British take control of Ternate in 1801.
Today, Tidore is a busy and growing place. The capital of the island is Soasio. It is located on the eastern edge of the island. Soasio has a port called Goto, a market, and a bus terminal. The sultan's palace was even rebuilt recently in 2010. The population has grown steadily over the years. In 2010, there were about 90,530 people. By mid-2024, the official estimate was 121,952 people. You can even see Tidore featured on the Indonesian 1,000-rupiah banknote.
Tidore is a city, an island, and an archipelago located in the Maluku Islands. It sits in eastern Indonesia within the North Maluku Province. The city is unique because it includes several different landforms. It contains the main island of Tidore and three smaller islands named Mare, Maitara, and Filonga. It also includes a large section of the mainland known as Oba on Halmahera Island. The provincial capital, Sofifi, is located within this Oba area.
The geography of the region is defined by volcanic activity. Tidore Island itself is a large stratovolcano. A stratovolcano is a mountain built up by many layers of ash and lava. The southern end of the island features a conical peak called Kie Matubu. This peak rises from the seafloor to a high elevation above sea level. On the northern side of the island, there is a large caldera named Sabale. A caldera is a large crater formed by a volcanic collapse. Inside the Sabale caldera, two smaller volcanic cones can be seen.
Other islands in the archipelago are also volcanic in origin. To the south of Tidore Island lies a string of three smaller islands. These islands are the summits of separate stratovolcanoes. From north to south, these are Mare, Moti, and Makian. Mare is part of the Tidore Islands City. Moti is part of the Ternate city administration. Makian forms two districts within the South Halmahera Regency. This volcanic chain creates a complex underwater landscape of peaks and seafloors.
Tidore has a long and powerful history as a political center. In the 15th century, it became a major sultanate. A sultanate is a state ruled by a sultan. This sultanate was funded by the lucrative spice trade. It was a major regional power and a fierce rival to the Sultanate of Ternate to the north. The sultans of Tidore controlled much of southern Halmahera. At various times, their influence extended to Buru, East Ceram, and islands near New Guinea. Islam began to influence the area in the late 14th century and spread widely by the late 15th century.
During the 16th century, Tidore formed an alliance with the Spanish. The Spanish built several forts on the island to support this partnership. There was mutual distrust between the Tidorese and the Spanish. However, the Spanish presence helped Tidore resist the Ternateans and the Dutch. The Dutch held a fort on Ternate. For the Spanish, Tidore provided a base to check Dutch expansion in the Asia-Pacific region. It also served as a vital source of spices for international trade.
Tidore remained a strong and independent state for a long time. Even after the Spanish left in 1663, the sultanate resisted the Dutch East India Company, also known as the VOC. Under Sultan Saifuddin, who ruled from 1657 to 1687, the court was very skilled. He used Dutch payments for spices to buy gifts for his territories. These gifts helped him maintain traditional ties and respect. Because of this, he did not need foreign military help to govern. This was different from Ternate, which often relied on Dutch military assistance.
In the late 18th century, the Dutch began to interfere more directly. They implemented a program called extirpatie to strengthen their spice monopoly. This program involved limiting spice production to only a few specific places. This policy impoverished Tidore and weakened its control over surrounding areas. In 1780, Tidore was forced into a treaty that made it a Dutch vassal. This led to a rebellion by Prince Nuku. He declared himself Sultan of the Papuan Islands and began a long guerrilla war. With British support, Nuku retook Tidore in 1797. However, Dutch forces expelled the successor, Zainal Abidin, in 1806, bringing Tidore under colonial rule.
Today, Tidore is a growing municipality divided into eight districts. Four districts make up Tidore Island, and four districts make up the Oba area. The capital of the island is Soasio, located on the eastern edge. Soasio includes the Goto port, a market, and a bus terminal. The sultan's palace was recently rebuilt, with completion in 2010. The population has increased significantly over the years. The 2010 Census recorded 90,530 people. By the 2020 Census, the population reached 115,305. The most recent official estimate from mid-2024 is 121,952 people.
