Thomas Cromwell was a powerful English statesman and lawyer.
Cromwell's early life began in the village of Putney, near London. He was likely born around 1485. His father, Walter, was a yeoman landowner and a successful tradesman. Walter worked as a sheep farmer and a fuller, which is someone who processes wool. He also operated a brewery and a tavern. Cromwell's mother was Katherine Meverell, who came from a recognized gentry family. Cromwell grew up with two sisters, Katherine and Elizabeth. His family background was rooted in practical trades rather than inherited nobility.
In his younger years, Cromwell traveled extensively across continental Europe. He spent time in France, Italy, and the Low Countries. Some stories suggest he served as a mercenary in Italy. He may have worked for the Frescobaldi family of Florentine bankers. While in the Low Countries, he worked as a cloth merchant. This job allowed him to connect with English Merchant Adventurers. These experiences helped him learn many languages. He was fluent in French and Italian. He was also proficient in Latin and knew some Ancient Greek.
Cromwell's travels also brought him into contact with religious matters. In 1517 and 1518, he traveled to Rome to seek papal approval for certain trades. During this time, he studied a new edition of the gospels by Erasmus. This reading caused him to doubt certain religious practices. Some historians believe this experience helped him develop a contempt for the papacy. He later returned to England and married Elizabeth Wyckes around 1515. They had a son named Gregory Cromwell. Sadly, Cromwell lost his wife and his daughters, Anne and Grace, in 1529. These deaths may have been caused by the sweating sickness.
By 1529, Cromwell had become a member of the House of Commons.

Cromwell rose to great heights of power and status. He was created Baron Cromwell and later became the Earl of Essex in 1540. He held unique positions like Vicegerent in Spirituals and Vicar-general. These roles allowed him to guide the reformist course of the Church of England. However, his rise made many enemies among the nobility. These people disliked his fresh ideas and his lack of inherited titles. He also played a role in the downfall of Queen Anne Boleyn.
His downfall was caused by a failed diplomatic arrangement. Cromwell arranged for the King to marry the German princess Anne of Cleves.
