Later, the Ottoman Empire took control of the region around 1393. They captured the city of Larissa to start their rule. The Ottoman period lasted for hundreds of years. Finally, Thessaly became part of the modern Greek state in 1881.

This name appears in Homer's epic poem, the Odyssey.

The Byzantine period was a time of great movement and conflict for the region. During the 7th century, the Byzantine Empire faced raids from an alliance of Avars and Slavs. This period saw a process of re-Hellenization as the empire regained control. The Byzantine general Staurakios led campaigns in 782–783 to recover Thessaly from Slavic tribes. To strengthen the region, the empire moved Greeks from Sicily and Asia Minor into the interior. This helped create a more stable population of defenders for the empire.

In the later Middle Ages, Thessaly experienced many changes in leadership. Following the Fourth Crusade in 1204, the region passed to the Kingdom of Thessalonica. By 1212, the ruler Michael I Komnenos Doukas brought much of central Thessaly under Epirote rule. Between 1271 and 1318, Thessaly functioned as an independent despotate under the John I Doukas dynasty. However, the Catalan Company of the East plundered the area between 1306 and 1310.

By the end of the 14th century, the Ottoman Empire began its conquest, capturing Larissa around 1392 or 1393.

During the Ottoman period, the region was managed through the Sanjak of Tirhala. Although warfare caused some depopulation in the great eastern plain, the area was eventually resettled. Turkish settlers from Western Anatolia and Greeks from the surrounding mountains moved back into the region. By the 1520s, Muslims made up approximately 17.5% of the population in the Sanjak. This era of Ottoman rule lasted for several centuries until 1881.

At that time, Thessaly officially became part of the modern Greek state.

Today, the region offers a rich variety of historical and natural sites for visitors. You can explore the first ancient theatre in the center of Larissa, built during the 3rd century BC.
