Many people see Dreiser as a giant of American literature.
Theodore Herman Albert Dreiser was a prominent American novelist and journalist.
Dreiser's early life in Indiana provided the foundation for his later themes. He was born in Terre Haute on August 27, 1871. His father, John Paul Dreiser, was a German immigrant from Prussia. His mother, Sarah Maria, came from a Mennonite farming community in Ohio.
Before becoming a famous novelist, Dreiser built a long career in journalism. In 1892, he began working as a reporter and drama critic. He held positions in several cities, including Chicago, St. Louis, and New York. During this time, he interviewed many influential public figures. These included Thomas Edison, Andrew Carnegie, and Marshall Field.
Dreiser's literary output was vast and often controversial. He began his novel career at the House of Four Pillars in Maumee, Ohio.

His writing often addressed the social changes brought by urbanization. As people moved from small villages to large cities, Dreiser documented their struggles. He wrote the *Trilogy of Desire*, which included *The Financier* (1912), *The Titan* (1914), and *The Stoic* (published in 1947). He also wrote short stories, such as the collection *Free and Other Stories* in 1918. Some of his stories were biographical, like "My Brother Paul," which focused on his brother, the songwriter Paul Dresser. Because he depicted realistic social behaviors, Dreiser frequently faced battles against censorship.
Beyond literature, Dreiser was deeply involved in political activism. He was a committed socialist who defended those he believed were victims of social injustice. He supported the legal defense of figures like Sacco and Vanzetti. In 1931, he led the National Committee for the Defense of Political Prisoners to Kentucky. He went there to investigate violence against miners during the Harlan County War. Dreiser also wrote nonfiction books about politics, such as *Tragic America* (1931). In August 1945, shortly before his death, he joined the Communist Party USA.
Dreiser's legacy is measured by his massive influence on American letters. Many critics consider him one of the great American giants of literature. The writer H. L. Mencken claimed that American writing changed as much because of Dreiser as biology changed because of Darwin. In 1930, he was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. His impact is still felt in academia today.
