It follows two FBI Special Agents named Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. They work together to investigate the "X-Files." These are unsolved cases that involve strange or paranormal things. Mulder is a skilled criminal profiler who believes in the supernatural. He is also a conspiracy theorist. He wants to find proof of intelligent life from outer space. Because of his beliefs, people sometimes call him "Spooky Mulder." His interest in aliens began when his sister, Samantha, was taken by them when he was twelve years old.

Dana Scully is Mulder's partner and a medical doctor. She is a skeptic, which means she looks for scientific answers. Her job is to analyze Mulder's files using logic and science. At first, she tries to prove his theories are wrong. However, she often cannot fully disprove what he finds. Over time, the two agents develop a very close bond. Their relationship starts as a platonic friendship but later becomes romantic.

Even though she is a scientist, Scully is also a Catholic. Her faith plays an important role in many of the stories.

There are two main ways the show tells its stories. About one third of the episodes follow a long story arc. This is called the "mythology." These episodes focus on a government conspiracy to hide aliens. A group called the Syndicate works with extraterrestrials to plan an invasion. They use a dark virus called the "black oil" to infect people. The other two-thirds of the episodes are different. These are called "monster of the week" episodes. They focus on a single villain, a ghost, or a mutant.

Chris Carter created the series for the Fox network. The original show ran from September 10, 1993, to May 19, 2002. It lasted for nine seasons and had 202 episodes. The show later returned for a tenth season in 2016. An eleventh season followed in 2018. There are also two feature films. One was released in 1998, and the other was released in 2008.

The show was filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia, for the first five seasons. Later, the production moved to Los Angeles.

Many other shows inspired the creator of The X-Files. These include shows like The Twilight Zone and Twin Peaks. The series became a major part of pop culture. It helped people think about trust in large institutions. The show even led to other spin-off series. These are called Millennium and The Lone Gunmen. By the time it ended, it was the longest-running science fiction series on American television.

Created by Chris Carter, the show explores the intersection of science, faith, and the unknown. It follows two Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agents as they investigate the eponymous "X-Files." These files contain marginalized and unsolved cases involving paranormal phenomena. The series is famous for its atmosphere of suspense and its exploration of conspiracy theories. It eventually became a pop culture touchstone that reflected public mistrust of large institutions. By its conclusion, it held the record as the longest-running science fiction series in American television history.

The series centers on the partnership between Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully.

Mulder is an Oxford-educated criminal profiler and a dedicated supernaturalist. He is also a conspiracy theorist who believes in intelligent extraterrestrial life on Earth. His obsession stems from the claimed alien abduction of his sister, Samantha, when he was twelve. This event drives his lifelong quest for truth and often challenges his objectivity. Because of his unconventional beliefs, he earned the nickname "Spooky Mulder."

Dana Scully serves as the scientific foil to Mulder's intuitive approach. As a medical doctor and a natural skeptic, she seeks logical, scientific explanations for every case. She was originally assigned to Mulder's unit to debunk his nonconforming theories. However, she rarely finds ways to completely refute his deductions. Over time, Scully's perspective shifts as she experiences paranormal events herself. After Mulder's abduction in the seventh season finale, "Requiem," she becomes a "reluctant believer." She begins to use science to explain the very phenomena she once doubted.

The show utilizes two distinct storytelling structures to engage its audience. Roughly one third of the episodes follow a complex story arc known as the "mythology." These episodes advance a serialized narrative regarding a government conspiracy and a planned alien invasion. The remaining two-thirds are "monster of the week" episodes. These standalone stories focus on single villains, such as ghosts, mutants, or cryptids. Some of these episodes even incorporate satiric or comedic elements. This dual approach allowed the show to maintain both deep lore and episodic variety.

The mythology involves a sinister group known as the Syndicate. This shadow element within the U.S. government acts as a liaison for extraterrestrials. The primary antagonist is the Cigarette Smoking Man, a ruthless politician and killer. The aliens plan to use a sentient virus called "black oil," or "Purity," to infect humanity. The Syndicate attempts to survive by creating an alien-human hybrid capable of resisting the oil. Meanwhile, a faction of "faceless rebels" works to stop the colonization. This conflict eventually leads to the arrival of "Super Soldiers," which are biological aliens resembling humans.

Production for the series underwent several significant changes over its many years.

The first five seasons were filmed in Vancouver, British Columbia. Production later moved to Los Angeles to accommodate David Duchovny's schedule. However, the show returned to Vancouver for the filming of the 2008 film, "The X-Files: I Want to Believe," and the later revival seasons. The original run spanned nine seasons from 1993 to 2002, totaling 202 episodes. A revival occurred in 2016 with a tenth season of six episodes. An eleventh season of ten episodes followed in 2018.

The series also expanded through new characters and spin-off media. As the original leads' roles changed, new agents like John Doggett and Monica Reyes were introduced. Doggett, a former Marine and NYPD detective, joined the FBI later in the series. The franchise grew to include two feature films and two spin-off series, "Millennium" and "The Lone Gunmen." The show's legacy is defined by its ability to blend horror, suspense, and speculative science fiction. It drew inspiration from earlier works like "The Twilight Zone" and "Twin Peaks" to create its unique world.
