The Chicks are a famous American country music band.

Making their music involves many different instruments and skills. The members play a wide variety of stringed instruments. Martie often plays the fiddle or the mandolin. Emily uses the five-stringed banjo and the resonator guitar. Natalie plays the acoustic and electric guitar. Sometimes the band uses even more unique tools like the sitar or the accordion. They also sing together to create their special sound. This mix of instruments helps them move between different styles of music.
The band started in Dallas, Texas, in 1989.
Their career has been full of big moments and numbers.
Music connects the band to many different people and eras. In 2003, the group faced a hard time after speaking about the US president. This caused people to stop buying their album called Home. The band took a break in 2008, but they reunited in 2016. In 2020, they changed their name to just The Chicks. They did this because they wanted to move away from the word "Dixie." They released a new album called Gaslighter that same year.
The Chicks are a highly successful American country music band.

The band creates a complex sound through diverse instrumentation. Martie Maguire is a multi-instrumentalist who uses the fiddle, mandolin, and viola. Emily Strayer contributes with the five-string banjo, Dobro, and resonator guitar. She also plays the accordion and the sitar. Natalie Maines adds a rock and blues influence to their music. She plays acoustic and electric guitar, as well as the electric bass. She also uses a Tacoma Papoose guitar during live performances. The members combine these instruments with vocal harmonies to create their unique style.
The group's history began in 1989 in Dallas, Texas.
Changes in the lineup led to major professional shifts. In 1992, Robin Lynn Macy left the group to pursue a purer bluegrass sound. Laura Lynch continued as the lead singer for a time. However, Lynch left the band in 1995 to spend more time with her daughter. This allowed the band to sign with Monument Records Nashville. Natalie Maines was selected as the new lead singer and second guitarist. This new trio moved away from their traditional cowgirl image toward a contemporary country sound. This shift helped them achieve much broader appeal.
Their commercial peak arrived with two massive album releases. Their 1998 debut, Wide Open Spaces, became a diamond certified hit. In the United States, it reached 13× platinum status. The follow-up album, Fly, was released in 1999 and also earned diamond certification. They are the only female band of any genre to have two back-to-back diamond albums.
Throughout their career, the band has earned significant industry recognition. They have received 13 Grammy Awards for their musical achievements. They also hold ten Country Music Association awards and eight Academy of Country Music awards.
The band has also navigated difficult social and political moments. In 2003, the group criticized US President George W. Bush and the Iraq War. This public stance caused a significant backlash from the public. As a result, sales for their 2002 album, Home, were damaged. The group eventually entered a hiatus in 2008. During this time, Martie and Emily recorded music as a duo called Court Yard Hounds. They reunited for tours in 2016. In 2020, they officially changed their name from the Dixie Chicks to The Chicks. They chose this change because of the negative connotations of the word "Dixie."
