The Anarchy was a long civil war in England and Normandy. It lasted from 1138 until 1153. This conflict caused a breakdown in law and order across the lands. The trouble began because of a sad accident in 1120. A ship called the White Ship sank near France. Around 300 people died in the water. This included William Adelin, the only son of King Henry I. Without a son, it was not clear who should rule next.

King Henry I wanted his daughter, Empress Matilda, to take the throne. He even made his nobles swear oaths to support her. However, the rules for who could inherit land were not always clear. Some people believed only men should rule. After Henry died in 1135, a man named Stephen of Blois seized the crown. Stephen and Matilda were actually cousins. Stephen had the help of his brother, Henry of Blois, who was a powerful bishop.

Neither side could win a quick victory during the fighting. Matilda controlled the southwest of England and the Thames Valley. Stephen kept control of the southeast. Many powerful barons refused to pick a side. The war was mostly fought with sieges and raids.

While fighting continued in England, Matilda's husband, Geoffrey of Anjou, conquered Normandy in 1143. In 1148, Matilda went back to Normandy. She left the fighting in England to her son, Henry FitzEmpress. He would one day become King Henry II. The war caused a lot of damage to the people living there.

By the early 1150s, most people were very tired of the fighting. The Church helped bring the two sides together to talk.

The Anarchy was a period of intense civil war in England and Normandy. It lasted from 1138 until 1153. This conflict caused a massive breakdown in law and order across the region. Historians often use this term because of the widespread chaos that followed. The war was a struggle over who had the right to rule the English throne. It was caused by a lack of clear rules for succession. Succession is the process of deciding who becomes a leader after the current one dies.

The crisis began with a tragic accident in 1120. A vessel called the White Ship sank while traveling from Normandy to England. Around 300 passengers died in the disaster. This included William Adelin, the only legitimate son of King Henry I. His death left the king without a clear male heir.

At this time, rules for inheriting land were not always consistent. In some places, male primogeniture was becoming common. This is a system where the eldest son inherits all titles and lands. In other areas, lands were often divided among several children. This uncertainty made the future of the kingdom very unstable.

King Henry I attempted to secure the throne for his daughter, Empress Matilda. He wanted her to be his immediate successor. To do this, he demanded that his court take formal oaths. These oaths required the nobility to recognize Matilda and her descendants as the rightful rulers. Henry did this several times between 1127 and 1131. Even though many people, including Stephen of Blois, took these oaths, the political situation remained tense.

Matilda's husband was Geoffrey V, the Count of Anjou. Because he was an Angevin, many English and Norman nobles viewed him as an enemy.

When King Henry I died in 1135, Stephen of Blois seized the throne. Stephen was the nephew of the late king. He was a well-established figure in society. He was supported by his brother, Henry of Blois, the Bishop of Winchester.

Stephen was able to secure the support of the Church by promising them many freedoms. However, this move ignored the religious oaths many had taken to Matilda. Matilda and her husband responded by seizing several key castles in Normandy. This sparked a long period of fighting between the two factions.

The war was characterized by attrition warfare. This means the sides tried to wear each other down through constant small struggles rather than one big battle. The fighting involved many sieges, raids, and skirmishes.

Castles were vital because they were very easy to defend during this period.

Armies were composed of knights and infantry. Many of these soldiers were mercenaries, which are professional soldiers hired to fight for money. Neither side could gain a decisive advantage for many years. Matilda controlled the southwest of England and the Thames Valley. Stephen maintained control over the southeast.

There were several major turning points during the conflict. In 1141, Stephen was captured following the Battle of Lincoln. This caused his authority to collapse across much of the country. However, Matilda also faced setbacks. When she tried to be crowned queen, hostile crowds forced her out of London.

In 1142, Stephen nearly captured Matilda during the Siege of Oxford. She managed to escape by crossing the frozen Thames River. While fighting continued in England, Geoffrey of Anjou conquered Normandy in 1143. By 1148, Matilda returned to Normandy and left the English campaign to her son, Henry FitzEmpress.

By the early 1150s, the people and the Church were weary of the war. They wanted to negotiate a long-term peace.

In 1153, Henry FitzEmpress invaded England. The two armies faced each other at the siege of Wallingford Castle. To prevent a massive battle, the Church brokered a truce. During the peace talks, Stephen's son, Eustace, died of an illness. This removed the immediate heir to Stephen's throne. The resulting Treaty of Wallingford allowed Stephen to remain king, but it named Henry as his successor.
