The Texas Revolution was a major rebellion that lasted from October 1835 to April 1836.
Many different things caused this conflict to happen. For ten years, there were political and cultural clashes between settlers and the Mexican government. The government in Mexico began to take more power for itself. This meant that the rights of people living in Texas were reduced. One big issue was the law regarding immigration from the United States. Another major cause was the issue of slavery. Mexico had officially abolished slavery in Texas in 1829. However, many Texian settlers wanted to keep slavery in their territory.
The revolution moved through several stages of fighting and politics. In October 1835, the uprising began after years of tension. At first, Texians and volunteers from the United States defeated small groups of Mexican soldiers. However, the new Texian government struggled with infighting and poor planning. In March 1836, a second convention declared independence for Texas.
There were several famous and difficult battles during the war. General José de Urrea led troops up the coast during the Goliad Campaign. He defeated Texian troops and executed many who had surrendered. Later, Santa Anna led his army to the Alamo in San Antonio de Béxar. In the Battle of the Alamo, almost all the defenders were killed.

The war ended with a sudden and decisive victory for the Texans. On April 21, 1836, Sam Houston led a surprise attack at the Battle of San Jacinto.
The Texas Revolution was a rebellion that took place from October 2, 1835, to April 21, 1836.
Many complex issues caused the revolution to begin. For a decade, there were political and cultural clashes between the Mexican government and settlers. The Mexican government became increasingly centralized. This meant the central government took more power away from local provinces. This shift reduced the rights of citizens in Texas. One major cause was the issue of slavery. Mexico had officially abolished slavery in Texas in 1829. Many Texian settlers wanted to maintain chattel slavery in the region. The desire to keep this institution was a major cause of secession.
Another cause involved immigration and religious differences. The Mexican government tried to limit immigration from the United States. They passed the Laws of April 6, 1830, to restrict settlers. These laws also increased taxes and reiterated the ban on slavery. Many settlers simply ignored these new rules. By 1834, there were about 30,000 Anglos living in Coahuila y Tejas. This was much larger than the 7,800 Mexican-born residents. Most immigrants came from the Southern United States. They were often Protestants, while the official religion of Mexico was Roman Catholicism. This created further cultural tension between the groups.
The revolution moved through distinct political and military stages. In October 1835, the uprising officially began. At first, Texians and volunteers from the United States defeated small Mexican garrisons. However, the Texian government struggled with political paralysis. This was caused by infighting among the leaders of the provisional government. In March 1836, a second political convention finally declared independence. This convention appointed new leadership for the Republic of Texas.
In early 1836, the military conflict became very intense. Santa Anna's Army of Operations entered Texas in mid-February. The Texians were largely unprepared for this large force. General José de Urrea led a campaign along the Texas coast. He defeated Texian troops and executed most of those who surrendered. Later, Santa Anna led his troops to San Antonio de Béxar. In the Battle of the Alamo, his forces killed almost all the defenders.
The war reached a turning point through the actions of Sam Houston. Houston led a newly created Texian army that stayed constantly on the move. On March 31, 1836, Houston paused his men at Groce's Landing. For two weeks, the soldiers received rigorous military training.

The revolution ended with the Treaty of Velasco. To save his life, Santa Anna ordered his army to retreat south of the Rio Grande. He signed the treaty, which granted Texas its independence. However, Mexico refused to recognize the Republic of Texas. Intermittent conflicts continued between the two nations through the 1840s. Texas was eventually annexed by the United States in 1845. This annexation made Texas the 28th state. This event led directly to the Mexican–American War.
