Fossils of Tempskya tell us a lot about the ancient world. We find these fossils in many different places around the globe. For a long time, people thought they only lived in the Northern Hemisphere. That changed when fossils were found in Argentina in 2003. Later, in 2005, researchers found them in Australia. Other fossils have been found in Japan and the Czech Republic. Different species lived in many spots, like the Taneichi Formation in Japan. We also find them in the Bear River Formation in Wyoming. 
Tempskya likely lived in very wet environments. It probably grew in lowland areas near much water. You might find it growing in wetlands or along riverbanks.

A mantle of adventitious roots would then develop around these stems for support. Eventually, many of the internal stems would decay. Even as the stems rotted, the adventitious roots remained to provide structure and hydration. 
Taxonomists divide the various species of Tempskya into two distinct groups. The first group consists of species with a simple cortex. In these plants, the inner cortex is parenchymatous, meaning it contains only parenchyma cells and lacks sclerenchyma. Examples include Tempskya iwatensis from Japan and Tempskya rossica from Kazakhstan. The second group contains species with an inner cortex featuring sclerenchyma. This tissue can appear as either continuous or discontinuous layers. This group includes species like Tempskya grandis from Wyoming and Tempskya judithae from Australia. 
The history of discovering Tempskya spans nearly two centuries. In 1824, Stokes and Webb first described fossils of the plant. They originally named it Endogenites erosa because they believed it was a palm tree. In 1845, August Carl Joseph Corda established the genus Tempskya. He named it after studying specimens found in the modern-day Czech Republic. Corda originally described four specific species: Tempskya pulchra, Tempskya macrocaula, Tempskya microrrhiza, and Tempskya schimperi. 
Geographic evidence shows that Tempskya was once widespread across the globe. For a long time, researchers believed these ferns lived only in the Northern Hemisphere. Today, Tempskya is the sole member of the family Tempskyaceae. Some scientists suggest it belongs to the order Filicales. Others place it within the order Cyatheales. This connection is based on morphological similarities in the spores and the petiole, which is the stalk of a leaf.
