This decaying wood provides ecological facilitation, meaning it helps new seedlings grow. Species like the Coast Douglas-fir and Western Redcedar often use these logs to establish themselves. This process demonstrates how the death of one tree provides the necessary foundation for the next generation. This cycle of decay and regrowth is a fundamental connection that keeps the entire forest system functioning over long periods of time.
