When the signals reach the receiving telephone, an earphone or receiver converts them back into audible sound. Most telephones allow transmission in both directions at the same time. Many also include an alerting feature, like a ringer, to announce incoming calls.

Telephones have evolved through many different technological stages. Early models were sometimes dynamic, meaning a vibrating diaphragm moved a coil of wire in a magnetic field. Some early versions used a water microphone. Later, many devices used a carbon granules transmitter, which was patented by Thomas Edison in 1879.

Modern systems include fixed-line, cellular, satellite, and Internet-based devices. These are all integrated into the public switched telephone network, or PSTN. This interconnected system allows any telephone to reach another using a unique telephone number.

While mobile and landline services are fully integrated into the global network, some Internet-based services like VoIP might not always connect directly to the PSTN. However, they can still allow communication across different systems. This demonstrates how diverse and interconnected modern communication has become.

Even as technology changes, the core purpose of the telephone remains. Whether using a satellite phone or a simple landline, the goal is to bridge distance. From the first successful transmission by Bell to the digital networks of today, the telephone has fundamentally changed how humans interact.
