After his father passed away in 1963, Turner took over the business at age 24. He grew the company into a huge global enterprise. Later, he bought a small television station in Atlanta called WTCG. He filled the station with old movies, cartoons, and funny shows. He even had a news segment where a German Shepherd named Rex sat on set. By 1976, he used satellites to send his station to cable providers everywhere. This allowed his business to grow much larger and faster.

His journey into media started with a move to the South. Turner was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on November 19, 1938.

He grew up in Savannah, Georgia, and went to college at Brown University. While at college, he was the captain of the sailing team. He studied economics after starting with classics. Before he finished his degree, he was expelled from the school. Because of this, he joined the United States Coast Guard Reserve. He later said he simply liked being on boats. In 2013, the Navy honored him with the Lone Sailor Award.

Turner has used much of his wealth to help the world. He gave $1 billion to start the United Nations Foundation. This group helps support the work of the United Nations. He also co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative with Senator Sam Nunn in 2001. This organization works to stop the spread of dangerous weapons like nuclear or biological bombs. Turner also cares deeply about the environment and the Earth. He was once the largest private landowner in the United States.

Many things we see on TV today connect back to his ideas. When you watch a news channel that never turns off, you are seeing a way of working that Turner helped start. He also helped make professional wrestling popular again by buying World Championship Wrestling. Even the way sports are shown on cable TV started with his superstation ideas. Some people even called him "The Mouth of the South" because he liked to make bold statements. He was a man who took big risks to change the world. Whether through news, sports, or helping the planet, his work left a huge mark.

Ted Turner is a prominent American entrepreneur, media proprietor, and philanthropist.

He is most famous for revolutionizing the television industry through the creation of specialized networks. In 1980, he founded the Cable News Network, known as CNN. This was the first cable channel to provide news coverage 24 hours a day. Turner also pioneered the "superstation" concept with WTBS. This allowed a single local station to reach viewers across the entire country via satellite. His influence extended into professional sports, film, and global humanitarian efforts.

Turner's path to media leadership began with his family's billboard business.

His father ran Turner Outdoor Advertising, which was worth $1 million. Following his father's death in March 1963, Turner became president and chief executive at age 24. He transformed the firm into a global enterprise. He discovered that the billboard business could generate massive amounts of cash with very little capital investment. In 1969, he used the profits from advertising to buy a struggling UHF station in Atlanta called WJRJ. This purchase marked the start of the Turner Broadcasting System.

To grow his television business, Turner utilized a specific sequence of programming and technology. Initially, his station, WTCG, aired low-cost content like old movies, cartoons, and classic sitcoms. He also acquired rights to broadcast Atlanta Braves and Atlanta Hawks games. In 1976, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) granted permission for WTCG to use satellite technology. This allowed the station to become a "superstation" by transmitting content to cable providers nationwide. As subscribers reached 2 million, his net worth rose to $100 million. This success provided the capital to launch even larger ventures.

In 1980, Turner launched CNN to fulfill a vision of constant news coverage.

He worked with media executive Reese Schonfeld to plan the network. Schonfeld suggested using an all-electronic newsroom and satellites to manage the 24-hour cycle. The launch required an initial investment of $15 million to $20 million. Turner famously stated that CNN would not sign off until the end of the world. He even commissioned a video of a military band playing a hymn to be played during that final moment. CNN eventually became one of the most prominent news networks globally.

Turner's career included significant acquisitions in the film and sports industries. In 1986, he purchased the MGM/UA Entertainment Co. for $1.5 billion. While he sold parts of the company later, he kept a massive library of 2,200 films. He established Turner Entertainment Co. to manage these properties. He also gained attention for "colorizing" older black-and-white films, a move that faced criticism from film experts. In the world of sports, he owned the Atlanta Braves, leading them to a World Series victory in 1995.

He also purchased Jim Crockett Promotions, which became World Championship Wrestling (WCW).

Beyond business, Turner has dedicated immense resources to philanthropy and the environment. He donated $1 billion to establish the United Nations Foundation. This charity works to increase support for the United Nations. In 2001, he co-founded the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) with Senator Sam Nunn. The NTI is a non-partisan group focused on preventing the spread of nuclear, chemical, and biological weapons. Turner also used his vast land holdings to support environmental causes. He was once the largest private landowner in the United States.

Turner's connection to the land is seen in his efforts to re-popularize bison meat. He maintains the largest herd of bison in the world on his ranches. He also used media to promote environmentalism through the animated series *Captain Planet and the Planeteers*. His life has been characterized by bold risks and controversial statements. These earned him nicknames like "The Mouth of the South" and "Captain Outrageous." From changing how the world receives news to protecting global health, his various roles have shaped modern media and international policy.
