The wood has a hard texture and porous rings. When freshly milled, the timber gives off a distinct leather-like scent. The density of the wood changes based on its moisture content. At 15% moisture, the density is approximately 660 kg/m³. 
Botanists have documented several distinct forms of Tectona grandis over time. Carl Linnaeus the Younger first formally described the species in 1782. Later, in 1975, Harold Norman Moldenke identified four specific forms. One form, T. grandis f. canescens, is distinguished by having a dense covering of hairs on the underside of its leaves. Another, T. grandis f. pilosula, has a different leaf vein structure. The form T. grandis f. punctata is only hairy on the larger veins. Finally, T. grandis f. tomentella is noted for its dense, yellowish hairs on the lower leaf surface.
The geographic distribution of teak is centered in South and Southeast Asia. This includes nations such as India, Bangladesh, Myanmar, and Thailand. Myanmar is particularly significant because its forests contain nearly half of the world's natural teak. 
Because of its high oil content and tensile strength, teak is used in many specialized ways. It is a primary material for boat building and deck construction. The natural oils make it resistant to rot, fungi, mildew, and even termites. The U.S. Navy used teak on the USS Missouri battleship to prevent sparks and provide insulation.
