The Taurus Mountains are a huge mountain complex in southern Turkey.

They act like a wall between the Mediterranean coast and the central Anatolian Plateau. The mountains follow a long curve across the land. They start at Lake Eğirdir in the west. They end near the upper parts of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers in the east. This range is part of a larger system called the Alpide belt. It is a very important part of the landscape in Eurasia.

Scientists say these mountains formed from a big collision. The African and Eurasian tectonic plates pushed against each other. This movement pushed the land up into high peaks. Most of the rock here is limestone. In places like the Aladaglar and Bolkar mountains, the limestone has worn away. This creates a special landscape called karst. You can find many waterfalls and underground rivers there. Some of these are among the largest caves in all of Asia.

History tells us many stories about these mountains. The name Taurus might come from a word meaning "mountain." Some people also link the name to a bull. In ancient times, people saw storms as the work of a storm-god. They thought heavy rain helped the big rivers flood and feed the land. Long ago, the Hurrian people likely lived here. At a site called Kestel, people found early evidence of tin mining from the Bronze Age. Even Alexander the Great fought a famous battle near these mountains in 333 BC.

The mountains are divided into three main chains. The Western Taurus curves around the Gulf of Antalya. It includes the Bey Mountains, where Mt. Kizlarsivrisi is the highest peak. The Central Taurus includes parts of Mersin and Adana. Its highest point is Mt. Demirkazık at 3,756 meters. The Southeastern Taurus forms a boundary for North Mesopotamia. This part sits in the watershed for the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. It includes the Nurhak and Bitlis mountains.

The weather changes depending on how high you go. The climate is Mediterranean with dry summers and rainy winters. Lower slopes are warm, but high peaks are very cold. You will see different plants at different heights. Low areas have evergreen oaks and Turkish pine. Above 1,200 meters, you find black pine and Lebanon cedar. The highest peaks have alpine meadows. Today, people visit to hike or go skiing. You can even see the Varda Viaduct, a large railway bridge built in the 1910s.

The Taurus Mountains are a vast mountain complex located in southern Turkey. They serve as a massive natural barrier between the Mediterranean coastal region and the central Anatolian Plateau. This system follows a long, sweeping curve across the landscape. It begins at Lake Eğirdir in the west and stretches to the upper reaches of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers in the east. Geologically, this range is a component of the Alpide belt in Eurasia.

The formation of these mountains is the result of massive tectonic activity. The African and Eurasian tectonic plates collided, pushing the Earth's crust upward to create these high peaks. The predominant underlying rock throughout the range is limestone. In specific areas, such as the Aladaglar and Bolkar mountains, this limestone has undergone significant erosion. This process creates a karstic landscape. A karstic landscape is characterized by unique features like waterfalls, underground rivers, and some of the largest caves in Asia.

The Taurus Mountains are organized into three distinct chains from west to east. The Western Taurus forms a wide arc around the Gulf of Antalya. This section includes the Akdağlar, Bey, Katrancık, Kuyucak, and Geyik mountains. The highest peak in this western section is Mt. Kizlarsivrisi, located in the Bey Mountains. The East Taşeli Plateau and the Göksu River act as boundaries that separate the Western Taurus from the Central Taurus.

The Central Taurus mountains cover parts of the northern Mersin Province and northwestern Adana Province. The highest point in this central section is Mt. Demirkazık, which reaches an elevation of 3,756 meters. This region contains several notable ranges, including the Akçalı, Bolkar, and Tahtalı mountains. The Munzur and Mercan ranges are also found here. A very important passage through these mountains is the Cilician Gates, also known as the Gülek Pass. This pass has connected the coastal plain of Cilicia to Central Anatolia since ancient times. Today, the Tarsus-Ankara Highway passes through this historic gap.

The Southeastern Taurus Mountains form the northern boundary of the Southeastern Anatolia Region and North Mesopotamia. This chain includes the Nurhak, Malatya, Maden, Genç, and Bitlis mountains. These mountains sit within the watershed of the Euphrates and Tigris rivers. This means the mountains influence the direction and flow of these major river systems.

The climate in the Taurus Mountains follows a Mediterranean pattern. This means the region experiences dry summers and rainy winters. However, temperatures change significantly based on elevation. The lower coastal slopes remain warm during the winter. In contrast, the high mountains and the interior regions experience much colder winter temperatures. This temperature shift also affects the local flora, or plant life. At lower elevations, you will find evergreen oaks, Turkish pine, and maquis shrubland. Once you rise above 1,200 meters, the vegetation changes to montane forests. These forests contain black pine, Lebanon cedar, Taurus fir, and juniper. The highest peaks are covered in alpine meadows.

The history of the Taurus Mountains is deeply tied to ancient civilizations and gods. The name "Taurus" may be linked to the bull, which was a common symbol for storm gods in the ancient Near East. Ancient Syrians believed that the torrential thunderstorms in these mountains were caused by the storm-god Adad. They believed these storms caused the Tigris and Euphrates rivers to flood, which fertilized the land. Scholars also believe the Hurrian people, who may have originated the various storm-gods, lived in these mountains. In the Bronze Age, the site of Kestel provided early evidence of tin mining in the region.

The mountains have also been a site of great strategic importance during wars. In 333 BC, Alexander the Great defeated Darius III in the foothills near the coast during the Battle of Issus. During World War I, the German and Turkish railway systems through the mountains were a major objective for the Allies. Today, the mountains are used for recreation, including hiking and mountain climbing. There are even two ski resorts located at Davras and Saklıkent. Visitors can also see the Varda Viaduct, a large railway bridge built by Germans in the 1910s.
