The building has a very interesting history. It was once the Bankside Power Station.

An architect named Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed the original station. It was built in two stages between 1947 and 1963. The power station eventually closed in 1981. For many years, people were worried the building might be torn down. Many people campaigned to save the structure. They suggested different ways to use the old building. In April 1994, the Tate announced it would be the new home for Tate Modern. This change turned an old energy site into a place for art.

Architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron won a competition to design the new gallery.

They began a huge conversion project in June 1995. This work cost £134 million and ended in January 2000. The architects kept much of the original internal structure. One major part they kept was the huge Turbine Hall. This hall is six storeys tall. It is 3,400 square metres of floor space. Artists use this massive room to show very large works. Between 2000 and 2012, a series of works there was called the Unilever Series.

The museum grew even larger with a new project. They built a tower extension called the Switch House.

This tower was built over old oil storage tanks. These underground tanks are now called the Tanks. They are used for live art and performances. In 2016, the tower opened to the public. In May 2017, the building was renamed the Blavatnik Building. This name honors Sir Leonard Blavatnik, who gave a lot of money to the project. The total cost for this extension was £260 million. It provided many new spaces for art and education.

Inside the gallery, you can explore many different themes. The collection is not always shown in order of time. Instead, rooms are grouped by subjects like "Living Cities" or "Materials and Objects."

In 2025, the institution recorded 4,514,266 visitors. This high attendance made it the fourth most popular attraction in the country and the most popular art gallery in the United Kingdom.

The museum is housed in the former Bankside Power Station in the Southwark borough.

This industrial building was originally designed by architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott. Construction occurred in two distinct stages between 1947 and 1963. After the power station closed in 1981, the building faced the threat of demolition. Many people campaigned to save the structure and proposed various new uses for it. In April 1994, the Tate Gallery announced it would relocate to this site. This decision began the process of transforming an energy plant into a cultural landmark.

Architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron won an international competition to design the conversion.

Their conversion project cost £134 million and lasted from June 1995 until January 2000. The architects chose to preserve much of the original industrial internal structure. They kept the massive Turbine Hall, which is six storeys tall and contains 3,400 square metres of space. The building's layout originally divided into three main areas: the central Turbine Hall, the northern Boiler House, and the southern Switch House. While the Tate took over the Boiler House for exhibitions, the Switch House remained an electrical substation owned by EDF Energy for many years.

The museum underwent a massive expansion to accommodate growing visitor numbers.

This project involved building a large tower extension over the site's original oil storage tanks. These underground tanks were converted into unique display spaces known as the Tanks. They opened in July 2012 and are described as the world's first museum galleries dedicated to live art. The tower extension, known as the Switch House, opened to the public on 17 June 2016. In May 2017, the building was formally renamed the Blavatnik Building. This name honors Sir Leonard Blavatnik, who provided substantial funding for the £260 million extension project.

The gallery's interior is organized into several distinct functional areas. The Boiler House contains art from 1900 to the present day. Levels 2, 3, and 4 provide additional gallery space, split into east and west wings. The Blavatnik Building houses art created from 1960 to the present day across eleven floors. Level 0 of the tower contains the Tanks, while other levels provide exhibition and education facilities. A bridge on level 4 connects the two main buildings across the Turbine Hall. This allows visitors to move easily between the original structure and the new tower.

Visitors can experience the collection through various thematic arrangements. Instead of a strictly chronological timeline, the Tate often groups works by subject. Some historical themes included "History/Memory/Society" and "Landscape/Matter/Environment." Other groupings focused on "Poetry and Dream" or "Energy and Process."

The Turbine Hall is used for massive, specially commissioned contemporary artworks. Between 2000 and 2012, these installations were part of the Unilever Series. This series included notable works such as "The Weather Project" by artist Olafur Eliasson.

Tate Modern functions as a vital link between industrial history and modern creativity.

The site demonstrates how large-scale engineering can be repurposed for public cultural use. The transition from a power station to a museum mirrors the shift from industrial energy to intellectual and artistic energy. By preserving elements like the overhead crane in the Turbine Hall, the museum maintains a physical connection to its past. It remains a central hub for the study and appreciation of global art movements. The facility continues to evolve through ongoing expansions and new ways of presenting live performance art.
