It is known as a multinational conglomerate. This means it is one large group that owns many different companies. These companies work in many different areas of life. Some make steel, while others sell tea or software. The group is headquartered in the city of Mumbai. It is currently the largest business conglomerate in all of India.

The group grew by following big ideas step by step. First, Jamsetji Tata started a trading company in 1870. He used 21,000 rupees to begin this work. He later turned an oil mill into a cotton mill. In 1903, he opened the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. This was the first hotel in British India to have electricity.

By the time he left in 1988, the group had 95 different enterprises. This was a huge jump from the 14 businesses he started with.

Recent leaders have helped the group grow by buying other famous companies. Ratan Tata became the chairman in 1991. During his time, the group bought the Tetley tea company in 2000. In 2008, Tata Motors bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford.

Today, Natarajan Chandrasekaran is the chairman. He has worked to make the business even stronger. He even helped the group win back Air India. He wants the group to focus on health and digital tools in the future.

You can see the Tata Group in many parts of your daily life. They make the cars you might see on the road. They provide the electricity that lights up homes through Tata Power.

The Tata Group is a massive Indian multinational conglomerate. A conglomerate is a large corporation made of many different, smaller companies. This group is headquartered in the city of Mumbai. As of October 2025, it stands as the largest business conglomerate in India. It operates through a holding company known as Tata Sons. This central company acts as the promoter for many different affiliate companies. Currently, more than 20 of these affiliates are publicly listed. They have a massive combined market capitalization.

The group began with the specific visions of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata. In 1870, he started a trading company with 21,000 rupees in capital. He later bought a bankrupt oil mill in Chinchpokli. He converted this facility into the Empress Mill to produce cotton. In 1903, he opened the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel at the Colaba waterfront. This was a landmark achievement because it was the first hotel in British India to have electricity.

Jamsetji had four major goals for his life's work. He wanted to build a steel company, a famous hotel, a world-class school, and hydroelectric power plants.

After Jamsetji died in 1904, his son Dorabji Tata became the chairman. Dorabji worked to turn those early dreams into real industries. In 1907, he established the Tata Iron and Steel Company, which is now called Tata Steel.

He also helped create Tata Power by building Western India's first hydro plant. To fulfill the dream of a great school, the Indian Institute of Science opened to students in 1911.

JRD Tata took over as chairman in 1938 and led for many decades. Under his leadership, the group's assets grew from US$101 million to over US$5 billion. He expanded the group from 14 enterprises to 95 enterprises by 1988. During his era, the group entered many new sectors. These included chemicals, technology, cosmetics, engineering, and software services. He also founded Tata Air Services in 1932, which later became Air India.

In 1945, the group also founded Tata Motors, which originally focused on locomotives.

In 1991, Ratan Tata became chairman during a time of economic liberalization in India. This change opened Indian markets to more foreign competition. Ratan Tata led the group through many famous global acquisitions. In February 2000, the group bought the Tetley Tea Company for $407 million. In 2007, they acquired the Corus Group for $12 billion.

In 2008, Tata Motors bought Jaguar and Land Rover from Ford for $2.3 billion. These moves helped the group become a truly global player in many different markets.

Natarajan Chandrasekaran became chairman in 2017 and focused on restructuring the business. He worked to increase the promoter stake ownership in various companies. He also led the group back into the airline business by winning a bid for Air India. This included the acquisition of AirAsia India, which was approved by the Competition Commission of India. The group also made investments in e-commerce and digital sectors. Chandrasekaran has stated that the future strategy will focus on healthcare, electronics, and digital technology.

The group's reach extends into almost every part of modern life. They own Tata Consultancy Services, which provides massive information technology services.
