A huge desert is in the middle. It is called the Taklamakan Desert. This place is very dry. Most of it is too dry for people to live there.
Rivers flow down from the snowy mountains. The melted snow turns into rivers. These rivers flow into the basin. They help water the green spots where people live.
The wind and sun are very strong here. This helps people make clean power. They use the sun and wind to make energy. This energy travels to other places.

Long ago, people traveled through this area on trade routes. These were called Silk Roads. Some paths went north of the desert. Other paths went south. Some even went through the middle.
Today, the basin is a place for clean power. The sun and wind are very strong here. People use solar and wind power to make energy. They built a large power loop around the basin. This sends power to other parts of China. The ground also holds oil and natural gas. Some even think there is a huge sea deep underground.

They used different paths to get around the big desert. One route ran along the north side of the Taklamakan. Another route followed the south side near places like Khotan. A middle route once connected the north and south through Loulan. However, that middle path was abandoned after the 4th century. 
Moving through the basin has changed over many centuries. In the past, travelers used caravans to cross the land. They used mountain passes like the Iron Gate Pass to travel north. Near Kashgar, the Karakoram Highway now serves as a path to India. The basin also has many modern roads and railroads. A large railway loop now circles the Taklamakan Desert. This loop includes the Southern Xinjiang Railway and the Hotan–Ruoqiang railway. These tracks help connect the different towns and oases. 
Today, the Tarim Basin is very important for energy. The vast desert provides a great place for renewable energy. People use the strong sun and wind to make solar and wind power. A high-voltage power loop has been built around the basin. This loop collects energy and sends it to other regions. The ground also holds many resources like oil and natural gas. In 2015, researchers even found a huge, carbon-rich sea deep underground.

Transportation has evolved from ancient caravans to modern engineering. In the past, travelers used mountain passes to move between regions. For example, the Iron Gate Pass allowed travel toward the north. Today, the basin is surrounded by a large railway loop. This includes the Southern Xinjiang Railway and the Hotan–Ruoqiang railway. 
The basin is also a major site for natural resources and energy. The ground contains large reserves of petroleum and natural gas. Methane makes up more than 70 percent of the natural gas reserves. Researchers have also found a vast, carbon-rich underground sea beneath the basin. 
Geologically, the basin formed through a process of continental growth. During the Carboniferous to Permian periods, an ancient microcontinent joined the larger Eurasian continent. This process ended during the early Triassic when the Palaeo-Asian Ocean closed. Today, the crust of the basin is being pushed under the Tian Shan and Kunlun mountains. This movement causes deformation at the edges of the basin. The center of the basin contains thick layers of sedimentary rocks. Some of these layers are more than 15 kilometers thick.
